    Well,
Just wondering if anyone could recommend a maternal Charolais bull, ideally from Munster AI/NCBC or Dovea? Got a good Limousin cow with a good bag of milk - looking to get a few Charolais replacement heifers off her.

The Dovea catalogue seems to recommend RHI - Roundhill Doc 1038?

    Thanks.

We used S2015 on a cow this morning hoping for a replacement.

It was either him or S1381. Both very good looking on the replacement value.

How much did S2015 (Tombapik) cost ya? I think straws are €40 each. TUT from eurogene has a good figure for milk but I've never used him.

€45. Virginia Andy (S1219)was the same. These 'Specials' bulls would do your chequebook in:o

    Thanks Kovu.
Just looking at S2015 on the icbf link.
He is good for milk but, and pardon my ignorance here, looking at his linear figures he is below average for muscle at 24% and above for height and length at 93%? So, ideally!, if you wanted a good shapely cow you'd want to put him on a "small" muscly cow. Our cow has decent muscle and good shape but seems to bring tall calves so I'd just be "afraid" we'd get a tall heifer.
Saying all of that I know it's not an exact science or we would have perfect cattle!
Cheers for a heads up on the price also.

Exactly what we put him on! A small, compact cow. One of our best breeders and always feeds her calf well. I know what you mean about those leggy heifers, we try to avoid them too.

    Thanks Vander.
Just looked at him online - slow day at work!
Not as good for milk, the same muscle but a smaller animal 'skeletal' wise. Might suit our cow a bit better.
Is he a special price too?!

Just noticed both he and S2015 are sired by Jumper

    Thanks

i have a few straws of him but to be honest i dont recall the price, though he would be a good fit for a few maiden heifers, jumper was supposed to be a great bull for milk ive been told

We've used RHI and he gets nice stock, not difficult calved. He shouldn't do away with the milk coming from the dams side. I'd give him a go and see how ya get on.

After seeing the pictures of your stock I am assuming your, he gets 'nice stock', is another man/womans 'pedigree herd'!!
I saw on the Dovea catalogue he won 'Maternal prizes' or something like that yet when you look at his figures they don't add up to much?!
He is a little on the tall side, not much, but has 51% muscle - again might suit our cow.
Will ask the AI man when he comes.
    Thanks.

I wouldn't pick a bull based only on icbf figures. They can be a useful guide but some of their figures are just rubbish. I think it's important to look at a bulls pedigree and talk to local Ai technicians and breeding advisors for advice.

Yep, we got caught with good but leggy heifers also - offspring nearly always take after the mother and very hard to breed that out of cattle.
I think it was Pakalasa (whatever happened to him!) who alerted me to the Linear Data tab online in the ICBF website - always try to check it now.

Typical example this year - gave Limousin Vermeil S666 (recommended to Vander by Rose Goulding, a good pedigree Limousin breeder) to 2 of our best cows without checking his linear stats. One cow (the one I mentioned is this thread) who always brings a tallish calf brought a very good, but on the tall side, heifer calf.
The other cow, a tank of a BB cow, brought a perfect shapely calf.
Checked S666s linear stats after they calved - tall bull!
    Lesson learned.

    Agreed definitely.
I'm not great on Pedigree but will check with the AI man.
Of course after all of this research expecting a bull calf off her for the rest of her life!
