    Hi guys

    As per subject

The boot will not open with either the key or the fob

The handle itself makes the electronic noise as normal, but the lock doesn't release and I cannot get it open

    Any ideas for me?

It sounds like the mechanism which is connected to the electrical motor which then acts on the lock has popped off.

It happened to me just last week in my 00 Golf, so I would at least hazard a guess that there may be a similar mechanism in the A4.

I had to get into the boot via the back seats and unscrew the boot panel, pop it off and manually yank the mechanism but I was assisted by the car being an estate with good space and fold-able rear seats.

And here in lies the big problem

My seats don't go down so I can't get into the boot to do that

Reading online there are plenty of instructions on how to fix this, but all them require access to the lock from the inside

From what I can see my two options are as follows:

    1) Remove the back seats and cut a hole on the back to get access to the boot

    2) got a hole in the boot lid and replace the boot lid with one from a scrap yard

Both options I want to avoid like the plague if at all possible

If it were me, and I got desperate enough, I'd take out the license plate lights and see if I can bend a coat hanger in a way to get in there and play around, hoping I catch the mechanism and pull it open. Making good use of pictures of the internals from the web of course.

EDIT: Coat hanger with a cable tie on the end could be an "easier" way :-P

Not a chance you'll get it through the number plate light , remove the number plate and drill a hole about 20mm dia. on the left hand side of the threaded hole for the number plate on the drivers side this is directly inline with the actuator rod for the lock , grab it with a long nose pliers and pop the lock . Apply some paint to the edge of the new hole to stop rust and seal up the hole .

What will I seal up the hole with?

Most motor factors will have a selection of rubber blanking grommets , get one the right size and seal it in with something like silicone or windscreen bonder .
