Ford fiesta speedo

Hi all, I've a 2003 fiesta zetec with an intermittent speedometer fault. It comes and goes but is not working more often than it's working. There are dash lines through the LCD display where the mileage is usually displayed.

Nct is coming up so I brought it to a local mechanic and he tells me there is no simple fix and the whole unit will need to be replaced if I want to get it working again, and it would be an expensive job. His advice was that it's hardly worth fixing and to just hope it is working when I bring it in for the test. Does anybody know if this is as big a job as he says? He couldn't give me a price on the spot as he was mental busy and had to look it up. Test is in a few weeks.

I don't know but I'd say a replacement dash from a scrappie should be quite simple to fit

Its not just a case of swapping them the keys will need to be reprogrammed.

Op is the abs light on by any chance ??

If the car acts up when the speedometer needle drops then the speedometer sensor is gone, if it doesn't act up the clocks are malfunctioning so out with the old in with the new job done. ( no key reprogramming as far as I know.!!

When you say act up what do you mean? The car drives fine without it working as far as I can see.

What part exactly do I need to swap out? Just the clock itself?

Had a similar problem in a Focus of that era, where the speedo would drop, but everything else remained normal. DIY fix, just needed a new vehicle speed sensor, which was about €50. I suspect that the dash is gone however, since the LCD is also dodgy. Worth checking faults on the ECU? Again, the focus of that age(and older) can report faults on the dash LCD such as sensors giving strange values.
