Residency requirement for masters

I am considering applying for a part time research masters but I currently spend some time consulting abroad. The duration of the work varies form a couple of weeks to a couple of months and requires me to be out of the country. I was wondering is there a requirement that you be present in the country once the program begins or can I research and write from abroad and talk to my supervisor via email/skype. Has anyone done something similar ?
