Anyone use this website? They have a lot of cool DA challenges and competitions, some solving real problems in research and industry. Most of them seem very complicated though and you'd probably need a PhD to be in with a shout of winning. Still, I think the problems DA can be applied to are amazing. This for example:
The goal of the Higgs Boson Machine Learning Challenge is to explore the potential of advanced machine learning methods to improve the discovery significance of the experiment. No knowledge of particle physics is required. Using simulated data with features characterizing events detected by ATLAS, your task is to classify events into "tau tau decay of a Higgs boson" versus "background."

The winning method may eventually be applied to real data and the winners may be invited to CERN to discuss their results with high energy physicists.

Anyone up for helping to find the Higg's Bosun? :pac:

    Here is the link!

An incredible challenge really, one where I would expect the data volumes to be astronomical.

I've messed around with Kaggle a few times.
Only entered one competition, an essay grading one:

That was fun - with not a lot of work (couple of evenings) we just scraped into the top ten.

Used mainly python: sci kit learn, nltk, and a bunch of other libraries we gathered together.

Just to say, if you place decently in the competitions, I get the impression its pretty easy to get consulting work from it.
