Or do I need a 580 EX II or another piece of kit ?

Works with the 6D even with cheap triggers so don't see why the 5DIII would be different.

I think he means triggering directly by the camera rather than external trigger.
The Nikons have this system. Commander mode whereby off camera Nikon flashes are triggered by the pop up camera flash and work in TTL mode too.
I don't think the 5D MkIII has a pop up flash though.

Don't think so how ever there are pocket wizards which are really useful in their own-right.

This a chinese brand link from what I've heard there meant to be very very good.

No pop up flash on the 5dmk3 right? and no sync port on the 430 ex for a remote trigger to sync with. Dump the 430 and get a 2 cheap yongnuo 560's and triggers.

The canon ST-E2 should do it but they are not cheap and need a line of sight because they are infra-red not proper wireless.

I use a 430ex II with both a 6D and also a 5DmkII off camera using the hahnel triggers which are about €59 and works perfectly. No setup required. just sit the transmitter on the hotshoe of the camera and the receiver slots under your flash.

Yep same here. 430EXII with a 6d and the Hahnel combi ... Works a treat. And they work as a remote shutter release too with an accompanying cable.

I got the Yongnuo RF-603 triggers for Nikon - they also do they for Canon (see link). I bought 2 sets of two for about €60. They can be used for remote flash triggering and can also be used as a remote control for the camera itself.

I'm delighted with them - cheap and reliable. I think they even have a TTL version.
