Social Welfare 1 on 1 Guidance interview advice?

    Hi there.

I have just been invited to a 1 on 1 guidance interview at my local social welfare office.

From what they told us Today at the group meeting, it seems like they might insist that we do some type of fas course or job bridge scheme or something similar. Is this normally the case in the 1 on 1 interviews?

Normally I would be only too happy to attend a fas course. I have done one in the past. But I am concerned because I have applied for college through CAO while jobseeking and got accepted to start in September. Also, I am currently attending a part time return to education course at a local I.T. (which my social welfare office approved).

There were no suggestions at all Today to pursue University education.... all that were mentioned were fas/vtos courses etc. So I am wondering if I should inform them that I have made the decision to return to education, or will they look on having made a CAO application as a bad thing?

Basically I do not want to be put on a course that I will have to cease once I become a student in September that will therefore be useless.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

    Cheers!:)

There will be no problem about your plan to return to education. Bring documentation on that with you when you go for the meeting.

my brother has had to go to three of these meetings, he is in the interview process of a multinational, it is taking ages, but he is claiming J S A in the mean time.

once he brings all his documentation, no more is said, but I get the feeling if he did not turn up he would have his payment suspended.

even though his case worker knows his situation he still gets letters.

I took your advice and brought my proof of acceptance to University and a letter of participation for a part time Preparation for 3rd level course I'm currently on (approved by welfare) and the interviewer was generally very happy that I had a plan set out.

Initially she was very stern and it could have gone totally the other way, but she softened up just kept offering me loads of advice on getting rent allowance, student grants, btea etc. I was amazed. Basically it seemed she was going head over heels to help out my situation.

At the end, however, she did suggest I do a training course over the summer relating to my college course. She said she'd strongly advise it but I got the impression she was not forcing it on me. She said I have to give her an answer in a week. I'm not decided yet.

Overall I'm pretty glad I had this interview now.
