BMW rear coil springs

    Hi all,

Both my rear coil springs need replacing and I'm in a spot of bother. I have an M-Sport 2002 318ci coupe, but all I can find anywhere are parts for the non M-Sport. Can anyone confirm that the parts are different? I know that the M-Sport suspension is lower and stiffer but is it possible that the springs are the same? I'm seeing conflicting information online about this and I've been searching for days at this stage.

    Can anyone confirm?

I did and it's the same. Doesn't list the M-Sport versions just the standard ones. Every site is the same and in most of the BMW forums when anyone mentions it all it turns into is a debate about what aftermarket parts are best instead! I would prefer to stick with OEM where possible

RealOEM is an interface to the official BMW parts system. If you've given your VIN and got a part number back, that's the part.

^^ Aye, what do you get when you use the VIN?

It says that springs are based on various components installed on your car. You will need to contact your dealer.

I contacted BMW and all they will give me is a long part number that means nothing with a very inflated price tag. Looks like I'm going to have to replace all 4 springs with aftermarket ones because otherwise I'll mess up the car and it will look and feel terrible

Not sure how much the OEM replacements cost but you can get the Eibach Pro Kit which would be an upgrade for jsut under €200 thats a full set front and rear

I've fitted hundreds of these down the years on the rear of e46 and there is a slight difference In the msport. But all in all honesty any good motor factors should be able to get you a replacement rear spring set for about100 euro simple to fit also.

Ok thanks everyone for all of your help. I've identified the part number as 33 53 1 095 710 based on the chassis number. If I put my reg into Micks Garage or Mister Auto, it tells me that the part is 33 53 1 095 709, but I think that's the difference in the M-Sport and the standard suspension.

So based on that, I entered the OEM number into yoyoparts and it lists SACHS 996 719 as a direct replacement for it. Then, entering SACHS 996 719 I see that KYB RX6792 is a direct replacement for that! Micks Garage carry the KYB spring and have it in stock. It has the measurements: 215mm length, 145 diameter and 2.6kg weight. Would this be ok to go with?

    Link to the spring: http://www.micksgarage.com/ProdDetails.aspx?pid=1789666&pk=EAA9D

EDIT: Mister-Auto have the SACHS spring but they can't ship it until Monday and I really need it for this weekend

Why don't you go direct to bmw and get the correct ones for your vin number, save all the confusion and no chance of them being wrong.

Fair point but its because BMW want €140 for each spring :o It was the first thing I did. I could get a full aftermarket kit for that money. The only reason I'm not getting a full replacement kit is because I'm trying to keep the costs down. The KYB springs are €53 each delivered. Less than the cost of one OEM spring.

I think your best off just biting the bullet and paying bmw, €140 each sounds expensive. I was quoted €86 each for mine.
I ended up going with eibach springs at €200 for a full set.

Well if I got them at €86 each I'd take them just for the peace of mind but that's what I was quoted from one of the main BMW dealers in Dublin. It's not even the price of the Eibach's that puts me off, but installing them. The rear springs are easy enough fitted but the front I would probably have to have done by someone and in Dublin where even Indy's are not cheap for labour I could be looking at a fairly sizable price difference overall

    Hi all,

Just wanted to follow up on this in case some poor soul is ever searching like I was! For the 2002 e46 318ci M-Sport, the rear springs are NOT the same as standard and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I had 2 different autoparts places tell me that they were the same.

The best fit for that car are the KYB RX6792 springs as shown here: http://www.micksgarage.com/ProdDetails.aspx?pid=1789666&pk=EAA9D

Had mine fitted Saturday and they are 100% right. Hope that helps someone!

Thanks for that, did the springs collapse on you or how did you know you needed new ones? I know its a common fault for some e46's.

I was having new tyres fitted and the lad doing it noticed that the 'pigs tail' on the top of one spring had broken off and the same at the base of the other spring. As far as spring breakages go its probably the best you can hope for. I had noticed a rattling at the rear of the car but I keep tools in my car and thought it was them rattling around in the boot. Apparently going over speed ramps is the main culprit for breaking them
