Loose Hub

    Hi Guys,

In my Planet X 60mm rear wheel there is a tiny bit of play in the hub and it moves very slightly from side to side.

The net effect of this is that when I get out of the saddle and drive it I get brake rub (it is fine once I stay seated but you can't always remain seated !)

Any idea from the photos how to tighten it ? I put keys in both sides and tried to turn them clockwise but there was no tightening (or loosening when trying anticlockwise).

    Paul.

You can't tighten those because they are sealed bearings and you just need longer levers on your hex keys to open them.
First ensure the brake blocks are not too close, the rim is true and all spokes are good and establish whether the play is between the hub and the axle (hub bearing) or between the wheel and the axle (wheel bearing). From your description I assume the hub bearing is OK and one or both of the wheel bearings is worn causing the wheel rub.
If so it is more than likely the drive side wheel bearing as this is under greater load.

Rim is true, spokes are good and the brake blocks are not too close. To ride hard out of the saddle the blocks need to be way out and there is very little braking left in the lever.

The play seems to be between the wheel and the axle. I can hold the rim with one hand, the red splines with the other and feel movement.

Any idea where this can be tightened , tools needed and whether it would need to be looked at by the manufacturer or a job for a bike mechanic ?

    Thanks

If its under guarantee try the manufacturer first, or if you don't have the tools yourself any competent bike enthusiast or mechanic.
Re tools and bearings: It looks like a hope hub but I cant be sure. If so remove the spacers with two 5 mm hex keys and you will see that the free hub body can either be pulled off, or retained with a lock nut. Support the hub and tap out the axle with a mallet or similar. One of the wheel bearings will come off with it. Then use a driver to remove the other wheel bearing which may be a different size. Driving the bearings out usually damages them so you will have to buy at least two new bearings with the same numbers that are stamped on the existing ones.
Remember to drive a bearing inner on to an axle and the outer into a hub. If you get this wrong you can damage a new bearing.
