Misfire. Replace ecu. What do you think?

My friend bought a 2003 mondeo a couple of weeks ago. It had the EML on and engine didn't sound right. I hooked up the md801 diagnostic scan tool and it was reading misfire primary 1 and 2. He changed the leads but problem still existed. Car wouldn't start after a couple of days. A mechanic he knows rang another guy who specialises in ecu reprogramming said a replacement ecu would be needed. Seems a bit suspect. Could the ecu have given false readings to the scan tool? It worked fine on my brothers mondeo that had an EGR code showing, which i cleared and has been fine since, so i think the tool works fine.

Could be the coil packs or even the spark plugs. I'd try the plugs first and then the coil pack. A new ECU normally is a last resort when you've checked everything else.

Said he changed the coil packs. I asked if he changed the leads and he said he did.

A bad coil can fry an ECU. Have seen it a good few times on those Fords.
