    hi

my sisters 2009 mondeo diesel (1.8) has snapped its timing belt :(:(:( would anyone have an idea of the rough costs to get it replaced and what likely damage may have been done ?.

She has been given a rough 1500e estimate from the AA guy who towed it back to Dublin but as money is tight need to find the best option to get here back on the road asap.

    thank in advance

    brendan

No clue so no help but what mileage and was it regularly serviced, if so any services with ford? This may indicate if you have any recourse from ford

    hi majj

its got 150k on the clock and was regularly serviced , the first 2 years with ford and then on the button with an indie ( sadly not using ford branded parts :( so don't think there will be much help coming from Ford ).

though she is pursuing that avenue and I guess we will just have to wait and see how that goes . The Manual states the belt should be replaced at 10 years or 200k which ever comes first .

    thanks

Bent valves, cracked valve guides, possible damaged pistons. Its quite extensive to fix it but probably worth it for a 2009 car

Engine is scrap when these break a belt and chances of finding a second hand one is slim.

If you do find one it will be expensive because of this fault.
So you could be talking between eight hundred and a grand for an engine do the timing belts on the new engine cost five hundred euro for the belts plus labour fitting it servic it she wont have much change out of about two and a half grand.

I think the last one we quoted for in a main dealer was nearly seven grand that was fitting a new engine.

No point going to ford have heard of cars with full history breaking belts and not being covered if they go over the interval.

I wouldnt say its scrap, I have repaired many with snapped belts. I also think its fixable for under 1500 assuming the pistons are ok

Could have swore that those 1.8tdci engines were due a belt every 100k miles (160934.4kms)? Cant remember how many years though.

160 k miles but ford in theyre wisdom decided it was a good idea to put a rubber belt in oil and if the oil is not changed regularly the belt deteriates and breaks.

There is two belts in them. A top dry belt and a bottom wet belt(belt in oil).

This wet belt replaced a much superior chain setup. It was a mind boggling and crazy decision by ford to go "wet belt" Imo. The wet belt is known to snap prematurely in these.

Dont want to derail the thread but im guessing this would be the same for a 02 focus 1.8tdci engine? They are the same right?

the wet belt wasn't introduced until around 2008.

No pre 08 this engine had a chain instead of the wet belt.

But it still has an injector pump belt which needs to be replaced.

There is an engine on Donedeal at the moment for €1500 inc your old unit. That's probably the way to go.

As Martin says the pistons will be cracked in your own so €1500 isn't going to fix it. You are looking at easily €3000 to fix your own engine. That's what the last one we did cost.

What makes you so certain? I have fixed quite a few and the pistons have only been cracked on a couple? its expensive to find out but not a sure thing

Any I have seen the pistons have been cracked. You are correct it would be best to check before committing to replacing the engine.
