Election questions

These elections beg two questions, & I would like to know why things are the way they are:

Firstly, why elections on a Friday? Schools are widely used as voting centres resulting in another lost day, & teachers being paid (possibly on the double) while missing a day of work!

Secondly, why does it take so long to complete the count?. At a minimum surely optical character recognition (OCR) could & should be used to speed up this antiquated process, & e-voting should be put in place.

Nobody misses a day of schooling or work, all schools will do the amount of days expected of them by the DoE. The day will be made up elsewhere.
Whether Friday is a good day or not I don't know, Saturday or Sunday have their own big problems also.

Re the polling staff - personally I'd like it if you could only do it 2 or 3 times in your life so as to 'spread the wealth', not particularly happy to have seen the same face at the desk for nearly 15 years and presumably for the next 25 years if I continue to live in the same area. No idea what her regular job is, could well be a teacher.

Big thread about e-voting and the speed of counts is on the front page already.
