I'm thinking of buying 2005 1.4 d4d Toyota Corolla. Although I am very, very fond of Toyota and never had an ounce of trouble with Toyotas (petrol and d4d) I've never had a small d4x4.

Any advice before I go and look will be very much appreciated.

They are great cars and the 1.4d4d is one of, if not the smoothest and most refined small diesels out there.

There are a few negatives however. One is that it isn't all that powerful, the other is that the bearings in the gearbox can get noisy. If they get noisy they will have to be replaced as there is a risk of damaging the gearbox if they end up failing all together.
