DIY room on side of house

I'm hoping to build a single room at the side of my house where I have a bit of land by using the existing house wall and the boundary wall, with the exception of getting written permission from the owner on the other side of the boundary wall is there anything else I need to get done legally before I start things In motion to build it.

Its an odd shape, the space is about 4 metres long and the two ends are 1.5 metres and 2.5 metres respectively.

Haven't decided if I'll build the two front and back wall with brick or just the whole thing in timber just yet, price and all that but advice on this two would be appreciated.

    Any advice/help greatly appreciated.

You will need to get planning permission for an extension to the side of your house, regardless of size.
