9 speed to 10 Speed

    I've a 9 speed cassette and a standard double chainset (105 -53/39)
I never really liked the Tiagra Levers, so I swapped them with a set of old Ultegra 10 speed Triple chainset levers. All working fine....what gives? this shouldn't work right?

(Ok the "sweep" of the Left hand lever is greater than a standard double lever, but has no effect on the levers operation. Also the right lever is a bit hesitant to go into the smallest sprocket, but I'm assuming this is a minor adjustment which I will re-adjust that this evening when i get home)

    Just thought I'd share...

It must be that the spacing on the cassette is exactly the same with 10sp and 9 speed and the pull ratio on the shifter us close enough between the 2.
Be interesting to see if the shifting stays the same after a few days of full range if shifting .

A marketing ploy eh? No difference between 9 speed and 10 speed components...

At least I hope thats what it is...I'll know this evening if i can't get the small sprocket shifting correctly.

Not that it really bothers me, I don't use the 11 sprocket very often! ;)

FD will work, RD should not without a 10 speed cassette

your probably right, but I'm not replacing the cassette and chain just yet. plenty of life left in the cassette. Once it is worn, I'll replace it with a 10 speed. until then I'll just have to live without the 11 sprocket! (which is fine with me)

Slightly OT but what difference is there between tiagra and ultegra? Having ridden bikes with both, I didn't notice any difference worth changing a perfect working tiagra lever for an ultegra without changing the entire groupset...

Try alternate cable routing ala Sheldon Brown. This routing causes the derailleur to move more for each click/shift of the shifter, so it should help the smaller pulls of the 10 speed shifter match the wider spacing of the 9 speed cassette.

Just a point I had a triple left lever on a double chainset awhile back. All worked fine as you say however the FD eventually split in two which I recokon was as a result of being too much pull pressure being applied. So just watch out for this.

I am a bit puzzled as to how the 10 speed right shifter works with your 9 speed cassette as the sproket spacings are different and I would have thought that you would get some missed gear selections, are you sure it is in fact a 10 speed shifter ? Also the 11 should be fine, just adjus the limt screw as its at the lowest tension.

Too much pull pressure? you eating too many wheetabix in the morning? :)
No I jumped the gun a bit...FD is fine and works perfectly but the RD works fine for 8 of the 9 sprockets. To get the 11 sprocket i have to click twice..no big deal really as this is my "winter hack" bike and I'll live with it until i need to replace the cassette.
