Ok - this is probably a stupid question but I am booking the flight for some one else so I just want to be sure

Chinese guy flying to Ireland - if via Moscow and London - he only needs his Irish VISA - i.e. not a problem connecting in Moscow ?

The reason I ask is the booking is a little complicated ( to get the price)

    Thanks as ever

Whatever about Moscow where he may be OK, he may well run into problems in London, although if he applies in time they would probablly give him a transit visa if he as valid Irish one. He should fly via somewhere with international transit and in London Irish flights leave from internal areas of the airport.

I strongly advise you to check with the relevent embassies before you book. Particularly the British one particularly if he is flying from different airports within London. As far as I know he would require a transit visa.

It doesn't matter if he is using the same airport or a different one in London, he still has to pass through UK immigration and so needs a transit visa.

Moscow is fine. No need for a visa (unless he's changing airports). As ardmacha pointed out the UK is a different story.

    Thanks for all the replies
I will tag thanks when not on mobile.

I found flights stopping in istanbul.

I have read the turkish gov document on visa requirements but it is not clear (to me) if transit one needed

If any one could direct me would help with stress. Buying for myself.. for a guy in china I just can't consider all the possibilities

    Thanks

If it is a Turkish airlines connection
    http://www.turkishairlines.com/en-int/travel-information/baggage/transit-transfer-passenger-procedures

International transfer passengers continuing to a foreign destination with Turkish Airlines*

    * Passengers disembark with only their cabin baggage and proceed directly to the boarding gates without any flight or passport procedures.

    Sounds ideal.

I transit Istanbul regularly. It's perfect for your friend - no passport/visa formalities and a relatively small airport to connect to the next flight.

In the UK, if he passes through immigration he will absolutely require a visa. As another said, coming into the UK from an Irish flight and then moving on to a flight bound for Moscow will require your friend to pass through immigration; he therefore will need to apply for and receive a transit visa prior to departure from Ireland.
