Hi guys a friend of mine has an ej9 civic 1.4 hatch, he wants a dc1 integra but hasn't a years no claims yet so his insurance jumps to 1800 on the teg, so he thinks that he should put either a 1.5 Eco vtec engine or a b16 SIR into his car, respray it and sell it, I'm looking to get opinions for him on what to do because i think he shud keep the civic till he gets the years no claims then get the integra but he won't listen to me haha so that's why I'm asking you guys.. Also things to take into consideration are that he can put the engine in himself, he can get the car professionally resprayed for 500 and there's not a straight panel on the car.. So who thinks he shud keep it and spray it or just try sell it and save for the dc1 integra.? And opinions would be really appreciated
    Thanks

What age is he? €1800 with no NCB on an Integra isnt bad (I wouldnt have thought he would have gotten a quote at all), and its probably not going to get a lot better with only one years NCB.

He needs to sit down and weigh up exactly how much he is going to put into the Civic vs how much more he expects it to make. How much is the engine likely to set him back? Im guessing he is looking at putting €800 at the absolute minimum into the car?

Wouldn't be worthwhile putting any money into the civic

Thanks for the replies guys.. He is 21 in 2 weeks time and on a learner permit.. Also it's costing him 1800 from now until his insurance needs renewal in December and he's only payin 1200 on the civic, so an extra 800 for 6 months.?? And The 1.5 Eco vtec engine is costing him 150 and the b16 would be about 250 (excluding the gearbox etc) and he can get the car sprayed for between 4 and 5 hundred so he lookin about 6 - 8 hundred I'd say.. And why do you think there's no point in putting money into the civic.?

21 year old unlicensed driver with no NCB; he is not going to be getting a better quote than that for an Integra, a years NCB or otherwise, and frankly he should count himself lucky that he is getting quoted at all.

Why is he looking to put the money into the Civic exactly? If he feels that he can make an extra grand for the sake of €500 worth of work then of course its worth it, regardless of what he plans on doing afterwards. Like I said though, he needs to sit down and realistically work out what he is going to make from the car now and after the work has been done, and then work out if its worth spending the money. My gut feeling says that its not going to be worth the effort or the expense.

Yea I know what you mean he is lucky but the insurance company we are with is brilliant, I'm 21 no full license but have a years no claims and all my lessons done and I drive a 1.8 dc2 integra so the insurance company are actually very good.. And he bought his car for 400, spraying it would cost him 500 and the 1.5 engine is 150 so that's €1050 and his car will look mint but at the same time he will need to get about 1500 to get a decent dc1 integra then he needs to worry about insurance.. Honestly I think he would be better off putting the money into the car and keeping it until December as he will prob have a full license then so then when he looks for insurance then he will be 21, full licensed and years no claims and he could sell the civic then and put that with any money he has saved and get a nice integra.?

I don't think any paint job for €500 is going to make it "mint". If there isn't a straight panel on the car its going to take a lot more than €500 to bring it to a "mint" standard!

How much is a converted civic with a cheap paintjob going to be worth? €1500-€2000? I'd say save the hassle, save some money and buy a DC1 when he can afford it.

I wouldnt waste a penny on the Civic if it were me. Id drive it for another year or so, get my full license and build up 2 years NCB, then look to sell it and get something better. That €650 would be better spent towards a new car rather than being pumped into a car thats going to be worth relatively little either way.

Who are you insured with if you dont mind me asking? Getting any quote on a car like that at your age and experience is rare; getting a quote on a car like that without a license is exceptionally rare! Im 31 and only now am starting to get quoted more for my DC2, and even then its only maybe 3-4 companies who are interested. When I got it first I was 27 with a full clean license and about 6 years NCB and two companies quoted me (Setanta, who were very good, and XS Direct who wanted a small fortune on top of their usual BS policy).

As others have said a €500 paint job will be one of poor quality.

Also why is he changing the engine. What's wrong with the one that is in it?

I genuinely don't mean to sound smart but it would make it mint because his brothers a fully qualified panel beater by trade so all he is doing is buying everything to prep and spray the car and his brothers doing it for him not chagrin to spray it.. So it's a professional respray costing him 500..
Also I can see where your coming from and thanks for your opinion..

Hi thanks for the reply and I am insured through campion insurance through a young drivers scheme and I'm with Asgard.. I would highly recommend campion because my no one would insure me on a standard 1.4 civic last year for less than 3500 (third party only) except campion and I went with them under the young drivers scheme had the civic for a year and now have the dc2 with them.. Genuinely are a good insurance company for young drivers
