Is there such a thing as a free counselling service in Dublin?
I don't have much money but I really need to talk to someone.

    Hi fussyonion,

as you may be aware, boards.ie has a relationship with www.turn2me.org, and have a registered representative contactable at turn2me.org to help posters in distress. If you feel that you could avail of their services, you may want to take a look at the following post from Eoin, turn2me's registered representative here.
    Hello Boards Members,

My name is Eoin O'Shea and I am a counselling psychologist working at Turn2me, an online mental health organisation (www.turn2me.org)

I write to announce that Turn2me, having received additional support from the Health Service Executive through the National Office for Suicide Prevention, would be willing to offer support for any (adult - 18 or over) Boards members wishing to avail of our services online and free of charge. Such services are for those experiencing distress, a difficult time in life, or any of a number of psychological/emotional difficulties.

We can provide anonymous support at Turn2me should you wish to avail of our support forums, take part in our Online Support Groups which run every day, or use any of the other features at our site.

We can also offer you free online counselling - up to eight sessions - with a professional counsellor. All you would need to do is visit www.turn2me.org/engage and a member of our staff can take things from there. (Please note that the free online counselling option is currently aimed at Irish residents).

Please contact us as per the url above if you'd have an interest in the free online counselling. Alternatively, feel free to simply visit our site and check things out in your own time.

I wish you the very best and hope to hear from you soon,

    Eoin

There's also Target counselling in Donaghmede.

They aren't 100% free, but all they require is a small donation (I used to give a fiver), to keep the place running. All of the therapists donate their time for free.

    I can't recommend it enough

Thank you so much for your replies.
I have been in touch with Turn2Me so hopefully things will work out.
    Thanks again :)

Aaaand.... we never get a mention! The HSE provides mental health services free of charge. While the person is usually assessed by a psychiatrist, there are a number of different kinds of professional on the team, and many of them will have qualifications in counselling. There are also lots of different services from day centres to day hospitals, from individual work to group work. GPs can refer. And did I mention? It's all free of charge.

(But ssshhh! Don't tell the Minister!)

I feel this should be amended to include details on how an under 18s person should seek help. Maybe just a small thing but it could be interpreted as exclusionary which for a distraught minor looking for help could be upsetting.

Tried this and was put in touch with a counsellor who only told me today that she does charge a fee.
    Misleading.

The Engage programme: I was put in touch with a counsellor after being accepted onto the programme and the counsellor was getting me to agree to a contract..where it states she charges a fee, so it's not free at all is it?

I'll contact Eoin at turn2me.org and ask for some clarification on this.

But the main problem with that is its not immediate, which for the majority of people is a major pain. The waiting lists for the hse services are crazy at the best of times.

Hi Overthrow, turn2me.org only provide services to those over 18. There is a link in "Information for distressed posters", stickied at the top of the forum to http://ie.reachout.com/ which provides services to under 18s.

UPDATE: I had emailed the counsellor back to tell her that I was informed the Engage programme via Turn2Me was free and this was her reply:

    "Dear: _

"I am not familiar with turn2me sorry but you can always email counselling care and ask them about online counselling. But I am not aware of free online counselling in Ireland.
    Kind regards""

So now what worries me is that I gave my name, address, date of birth and mental health history, not to mention my GP's details and a next of kin contact to Turn 2 Me but they've put me in touch with someone who doesn't even know this programme?!

    I'm very concerned now.

    Hi fussyonion,

turn2me.org is a verified representative with boards.ie, and indeed the PI mods turn to them anytime we come across an issue that is too much for us to deal with. There seems to be some confusion at the moment, so based on your experiences so far I have contacted the representative turn2me.org and I have made him aware of this thread. Hopefully he will be online soon to clear up some of the confusion. Until then, please be patient while we try to clear some of this up.

    regards,
    Mike

Thanks mike, of course that's fine. I was just worried because the counsellor doesn't seem to be aware of Turn2Me and it makes me wonder how she found me.
But I look forward to hearing from a Turn2Me rep and thanks for looking into this further, mike.

I just realised the confusion is my fault. I have sent you a message, mike, so I would be grateful if you could let the Turn2Me rep know that this was my fault.
    Thank you.

No problem. I've already PM'd turn2me.org, so I'm sure that he'll take a look over this thread at some stage anyways, and may be able to provide more information for you either way.

So, was it free after all?

I'm looking for online counselling at the moment and came across this thread.

    Was turn2me free ?

    TIA

Aware (the self-help organisation for depression) is a useful resource. Have a look at their website.

I don't mean to delve, but can we get some clarification on the confusion, from either you, mike_ie, or the representative? I'm just thinking that someone might stumble across this thread and leave feeling confused as to what exactly is happening. Is there a fee charged? Is it free?

    Mod note:
Sorry but this thread is from 2014 and a lot has changed from then.
For a current list of suggested services please review the distressed poster list.

In terms or pricing/costing that is something you'll have to take up with the services directly, all we can do is provide contact information.

Thread closed as hopefully the OP has resolved their issue.
