Going to Munich at the end of June would like any recommendations as I haven't been there before.

Where is the best place to have a drink? What is there to see? Staying right near the central train station.

Any ideas is welcome thanks :D

+1 on that. Very impressive with something for every level of interest.

*If* you're into such things (and not purely beer halls) then I suggest heading up into the non-core areas of the Science Museum first and spending time there. You can see some excellent stuff away from the main spaces, but it can take most of the day just to see the big stuff and you can miss out on the more interesting bits.

Speaking of which . . . their history of computing section looked very interesting, but despite getting to the museum at 1100 we ran out of time and I didn't get to see the full computing section.

Also check out the "electricity room" on the ground floor, near the entrance. Ideally when there's a display on. They have one of those setups that discharges a billion or so kajigawatts of power in one huge big kaboom. It's especially effective on small children who have no idea what's likely to happen next when the lights go out and the man rattles on in German while equipment starts humming louder & louder. Also works on hungover friends who are just following you around with no idea what's happening.

one of the best bits aside from the high voltage electric show is the tunneling section (so mining too) which was closed for renovations for the past couple of years but is now reopened.

It really is an insanely large museum and you'd spend at least a day walking about without even delving into actually reading the exhibits and the likes.

i suppose if youre into museums you could also swing by the city museum (Stadtmuseum) which has a permanent exhibition on the nazi period in the city, which is quite eery to see how everything in those days focused around the cult of the nazis, even down to remoulding the lord mayors chain to have a swastika on it.
And its free on sunday as far as i know.

Thanks for everyone's ideas. The boyfriend is more into drinking and music and I am into sight seeing. Anything WWII fascinates me, I just love history in general. Can't wait to just get lost in the city. :D

Hi, we went out to Dachau concentration camp, it was well worth a visit. You can get i think an S2 train from Munich in the direction of Dachau/Petershausentrain out then a bus right outside brings you the last bit all included.

Drinking wise, there is loads of options. A big one is Augustiner-Keller then you can go to the beer halls too just google them. I would also go to the english garden, they have beer gardens too but you can see the guys surfing there on the river its very impressive. If you got to the end of marienplatz too there is bars in the square just caannot remember the name of the area. You can got to the BMW museum. over all you will be have a great time, go to the trip advisor Munich Form under bavaria and you will find loads.

It's a complete tourist trap, but you have to have one beer in the Hofbrauhaus, just off Marienplatz. Hitler's hangout, if you look up you'll still see the swastikas in the ceiling arches disguised with the blue/white chequerboard Bavarian flag pattern. Watch out for the "lounge girls" coming barrelling at you with up to 7 steins in each hand - do NOT get in their way!

My favourite place for a beer was the Augustinerhalle (not sure if I've got that name right, it was a long time ago!) on Kaufingerstrasse (main pedestrian shopping street). There's also an Augustiner beer hall/cellar near the Hauptbahnhof - the downstairs bit is amazing!

The Olympic stadium/campus is great to just wander around, you could also take in the BMW museum right beside it.

Would also recommend the Deutsches Museum - you could spend a week there, never mind a day!

Munich is brilliant - one of my favourite cities.

Superb. Where else can you get in a WW1 U boat, or see a Messerschmitt 262 hanging from the ceiling? Great sections for kids, as well.

Thanks everyone. Another question. I am flying with Ryanair so whats the best way to get from airport to central station..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭Nekarsulm

We took the express bus, as it saves a bit of time. If you want to Train it, first you need a bus to the railway station. I think it was 16 Euro one way from Menningen (airport) to Munich. Its about 2 hours, if I remember.

Best beer is to be found at Schneider Weisse, they have about 7 or 8 different beers available whereas most places only do 2 types. The food here is nice too but very Bavarian i.e. big hunks of pork http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g187309-d718846-Reviews-Weisses_Brauhaus-Munich_Upper_Bavaria_Bavaria.html

Hofbrau is also a must, at least for 1 drink, try and find out when the traditional bands are playing cause they're good craic. There is also a nice Augustiner bar across the street from Hofbrau.

From the airport we got this. Not the quickest but it's definitely cheapest. http://www.allgaeu-airport-express.de/index.php?plink=index&lg=uk

Does that bus drop you at central station in Munich? I might book it online before I go.. where abouts is the bus outside the airport? Do you get it at central station when you're returning?

Memmingen airport is the size of Kerry airport. It has a main door and outside the main door is the bus. It's literally not possible to miss it.
In munich it drops you at the side of the station and it leaves from the same place
And it's a bit cheaper when booked online in advance.

    Fantastic thanks everyone :D

Have everything booked including a day trip to Salzburg in Austria. As the boyfriend doesn't know (birthday surprise :) ) I'm not going to actually plan anything else and let him decide what we do. Travel information was really good so I pre booked the bus.

Going for four days now instead so really excited :D
