7.1.1 Sounds issues ?

I am not sure it's 7.1.1 that did it, but for the last week or so I have had Audio/Sounds problems. Strange because in 5+ years I have never had a major issue.

The Audio buttons don't affect the audio levels. The visible levels bar moves, but the actual audio level and the slider in Preferences/Sounds doesn't move.
The Slider in Preferences/Sounds doesn't work smoothly ... it stutters and drags.
The click for key taps is much quieter than it should be.

I have a sneaking idea that some app is causing this but I can't be sure.

Restarting and hard resets fix the problem for a few minutes, but then it starts again.

    Anyone else ?

What device are you running? I've the iPad Air and iPhone 5 and no issues here. Seems like a software problem seeing as it works for a few minutes after a reset. Have you restored the device yet?

iPhone5. No I haven't restored. Hate the idea but may have to if it persists :(

Restore from your backup to see first. Only thing to hate about a restore is the time it takes really?

Yes indeed. I guess since I got the very first one I have never had a single issue with one, so reluctant.

I guess I will lose SMS history and call history ?

I'm nearly sure you don't, I usually clear these out every month or so anyway but I'm not 100% on it as I don't pay much attention to them if they're there.

I've not really restore much neither, except when I was trying out the iOS 7 beta.

Had sound issues of a different kind since I updated to iOS 7, either the sound goes completely or it turns static and loud so the solution was to turn on the mono audio on my iPad. No use turning it on and off as the sound goes again within a few hours of inactivity

As long as you do an iCloud backup before a restore everything will be exactly the same when you restore from iCloud.

You are saying that an iCloud restore does it differently than an iTunes restore ?

No it's the same thing it's the same backup file just in different locations.

Ah ok. I may try an iTunes restore then. Tks.

Since I've had the 3GS, iTunes backups were never complete and once or twice wiped all my contacts. I only use iCloud now and not one single text is missing.

I'm restoring now and it says it doesn't retire the firmware ? I thought it would refresh and restore everything ...

I don't follow what was the issue?

Did a restore from backup and the problem persists. Maybe I'll have to wait until the next update.

I'm guessing it's out of warranty? It's an annoying problem to have, and it seems to be software related. It could be worth while contacting Apple just to find out if it's a common issue with the latest update or not.

There are many threads out there with differing kinds of audio issues. None seem to match mine exactly. I will keep searching.

Restore as a new phone and leave it stock for a bit to see does the issue return.

He means set it up like a new iPhone and see if that fixes anything. Just make sure you have your backup of your current iPhone data and settings safe.

I solved the problem and it was as I had suspected...

I carried out a series of experiments including restart, hard restart. Hard restart followed by launching of Apps with testing of the volume problem in between. Once I discovered the suspect App I then redid the experiments in different order and quit the App and restarted it in a variety of situations.

The cause of the volume problem - bizarrely has no audio element to it whatsoever, except perhaps alerts which I am not aware of. I am so expert but the series of testing that I have done leaves me with no doubt.

    "Footsteps" App

Make sure you report the problem to the developers of the app. Glad to see it's sorted.

Oh Yep. And Apple Forum threads too.

Anyone else running this app ?

It’s probably not a bug. iOS doesn’t support true multitasking. Apps need a reason to keep running in the background. Plus the iPhone accelerometer doesn’t work while the screen is locked. To get around this some developers play a silent audio file in a loop. It’s a hack to keep their app running in the background and avoid being suspended by the OS. I’m guessing that’s how your pedometer app keeps running.

It's definitely a bug in the Footsteps App. I hear what you're saying ... such a sneaky thing.
However I was previously using another permanently-on app called Moves and it caused NO similar problems.

I also think it proves a wider issue. Many people, when they encounter ANY kind of issue or problem on their iPhone leap to slate Apple. It simply issn't always the case, by a long way.

Obviously you don't understand if you still think it's a bug.

So it's negative affect on audio was intended ... and just not done by any other app.

sure you said youself you had similar problems with another app

Typo. And even if it had, it's clearly a bug and not an intentional act.

How do you expect the app to work when it can't access the accelerometer when the device is locked as SP said?

I have fixed the typo in post #26. The app "Moves" achieves this reliably and consistently without screwing up the sound adjustment software of the whole iOS.
