I was looking at a new i30 1.4 diesel van on Saturday and it looks like a very nice car, but I was wondering about the engine in these cars. Would they be as reliable as the 1.4 D4D engine in the Toyota Auris van?

I prefer the looks of the i30 over the Auris but at the end of the day reliability and after sales services are my top priorities.

All Hyundai/Kia diesels are very reliable these days. My only concern is that the 1.4d is a bit gutless, I'd rather the 1.6d if it is available in the van.

Is it a new model auris you are looking at?

The i30 van is only available in the 1.4D engine. The Auris is the 1.4 D4D engine so there probably isn't much in the difference performance wise. It's the new Auris I'm looking at. I prefer the look of the older model but the new model is supposed to superior.

I don't know about the 1.4crdi in the Hyundai. The 1.6crdi is an excellent engine however.
The 5 year unlimited warranty and good overall build quality make the Hyundai an excellent choice.

However the new model Hyundai i30 is supposedly not without its faults. I have read a few anecdotal reports of electrical gremlins with them, but more worryingly problems with its steering have also surfaced in tests.

I don't know how genuine this article is, but if its genuine it's a dangerous issue.

Toyota have been in cost cutting with the past decade and its measures were very apparent in new models launched from around 2006 on. Their cars went from quality products, with unmatched build quality and reliability, to cheaply built and cheap feeling, with only average reliability.

A series of recalls and quality issues seems to have given Toyota a wakeup call however and some the new models they are churning out these day seem to have regained some of that quality that was lacking in previous models.

The Auris is an example of this. While true quality can't be determined until a car gets a bit older and goes up in the miles, my initial impressions of the new auris are that it seems to be a quality product. To look at and to sit in, its like night and day compared to its predecessor.

The 1.4d4d engine is excellently smooth and refined and if its anything like what's fitted to older models very reliable too.

Its lacking in power a little though and one issue with some examples of the older models however was the development of noisy gearbox bearings as the miles went up.

Thanks for that info JohnBoy26. I hadn't seen that article on the i30 before. My main concern was engine reliability but looks like I should think of the bigger picture.
It's making me lean towards the Auris.
