Not me...mates house was broken into, keys and car taken...luckly they crashed while being pursued by the Gardai..sadly they wernt badly injured.:p..
Now..the insurance company told him to bring it to A garage for repairs when the Garda are finished with it...but he doesnt want to bring it to this garage as theyre not a BMW dealer, he wants to bring it to Joe Duffy.ie.....So they told him if he wanted to do that HE would have to pay for the transport costs..and not only that the wont give him a hire car unless he goes with their garage...is this fair..???

When you bring it to Joe Duff BMW, they take your car, put it on a flat bed and deliver it 200m down the road to Ace Autobody to do the work and then charge you a hefty % on top of their fee.

Who are your insurance company telling you to go to?

Don't forget your mate will have no excess etc if you use one of their recommended repair centres.

Pretty sure there is a clause in most policies that dictate the repairer is at the discretion of the insurer. However, the repair must be satisfactory, so you are best to go along with the insurer and then inspect the repair. If its not to your liking, you have a right to have it 'made right' and enter a discussion about a different repair shop etc.

Can I ask why your friend doesn't want it sent to the insurance nominated repair? In terms of resale value etc its meaningless really as its now a 'crashed car'

These approved garages are often the repair garages that the main dealers use anyway. Also, they dont mess customers around (generally) as there is too much to lose if they are removed from the insurers panel

    That is totally rubbish.
You do not have to go to a repairer designated by an insurer.

They cannot include a clause that you have to do so.

They will state that you may have it repaired sooner by going to an approved repairer and the likes of AXA will give a three year guarantee on the repair parts it you use an approved repairer

See it's all about the fact that he is repairing car from his own insurance.
In that case insurer car decide a garage of his choice.
Alternatively they can assess the vehicle damage, and issue a cheque for the amount they consider the damage is worth (and then he can repair it wherever he wants). But in this case your mate might even end up worse.

That's the case, if you are being compensated by someone else's third party cover. (someone else caused damage to you and their insurer is paying for it).
Not when you repair your car from you own policy, in which case insurer can pretty much issue his own rules here.

    Why not?

A few years ago I had an accident and I was claiming off my insurance. They very strongly suggested I used one if their approved garages for repair. I wasn't having that as I wanted my own body shop to repair (they did work for me before and I was happy with their work). My own garage said it was too badly damaged to repair properly and had it reassessed by an external assessor.

The upshot was that the insurance company did tell me that it could affect my claim etc but it didn't. I even used my own tow company and they paid for that, eventually. All companies I used were SIMI registered as well so couldn't claim they were cowboys
