I'll be looking at an '05 Avensis D4D which is jumping out of 5th. Apparently it's a common enough problem. I'm confident enough to repair it myself, as the box doesn't even have to come out.
What I'm wondering is, how much do the parts cost to replace? Someone on here must have done/had one done in the past. Any advice appreciated.

About €200 for the synchro, 5th gear hub and 5th gear

You will need a special pullers to remove the gear.

Thanks. Is that from Toyota, are are they available from elsewhere?
Regarding the puller, I reckon I could make one up handy enough.

I've a similar problem with a 01' VVTI Avensis except it slips out of 4th gear. Stays in gear if you hold it in but jumps out if you take your hand off the gearstick. Doesn't actually bother me too much as its my second car, dont do too much driving in it and it is 4th gear.

I asked the same question as you before on here and the general consensus was to steer clear of doing anything, you don't want to be opening up a modern gearbox unless you really know what your doing. Having said that my skills level when it comes to cars is pretty basic. The toughest jobs I attacked in my time would be the likes of changing exhausts, brake pads, discs, calipers, shoes, wishbones, droplinks, cv boots, egr valves. Despite having done these sort of jobs on my car I was told steer clear of the gearbox as no comparison. Maybe it is a job you could confidently attack yourself though.

I'd say unless the car is pretty mint besides or on for very good money would you best off looking out for another Avensis. I knew the problem was there with mine when I bought I overlooked it as car was pretty cheap and 4th gear compared to 5th which you'd be using more often

Yeah 4th gear is a different kettle of fish, as it's a complete remove main casing job,
