Law on where to place your disc holders?

reason I'm asking ...the usual bottom lh corner of the windscreen ain't working for me at all.

    - I need that spot to see out of when maneuvering in tight corners
    - My wife (passenger) was complaining of not being able to see properly and getting travel sickness with the three pockets right in her line of sight

So bright spark that I am I stuck them into the top lh corner ...everybody happy.

Except ...the stupid windscreen is heavily tinted in that area and you have to put your nose right to the glass to read the discs ...guess the guards won't be too happy about that ...can they force me to put them back to the bottom corner?

    Remove the tinting?

    Remove the tinting?

    I'm guessing it's a factory tint

That would be the correct guess :D

In that case, back in the early 00's is when we last used a car with such a tint, there were no problems with the holder there. My E34 was used till mid 2006 with the holder in the tinted part, previous owner must never have gotten in bother over it.

I'd imagine it would draw attention with lack of transparable colour though so tread with caution

I was out on a test drive recently in work and came apon a check point, holder was in bottom right hand corner of this Lexus and first thing the Garda said to me was "I wish everyone would put it there" saved him the walk around the car I presume.

I assume they have to be able to read it easily. If you look up the regulations I'm sure it says what is acceptable.

From a UK (I assume) forum.

Well, I usually keep tax/ins/NCT up to date and the vehicle isn't one of the usual suspects that make the guards look twice ..so once they find the discs they should be happy enough.

I certainly don't want to get a fine or points for not displaying the stupid things correctly though.

Paper disk in window is so out dated that its ridiculous now to have half the window wallpapered with them. Some carparks want their disk there too.
If you where unlucky you could have 5 bits of paper in the window.

With technology advances it is possible none are needed other than the reg plate that is already fixed to the car

NCT, Tax, Insurance, Apocoa Parking Disc, Park Magic Disc, Disability Badge Permantly Displayed. And the mandatory Padre Pio. You could cover half your windscreen with a small enough car if you were determined enough :o

    Agree 100%.
What a stupid idea whoever though about putting discs on windscreen, to block view of the driver / passenger.
And it's not only Ireland, as in some other countries they want some stickers as well.

I was always mad about obligation of having all those on the windscreen, but I eventually don't care anymore - you won't win with the system.

My windscreen looks like this now:

Yep the system that quangos and lazy civil servants hind behind because a unworkable red tape system is better than anything logical.

Iv mine in the bottom passenger side it never hinders my view I don't understand how it could for anyone if they just put it in the corner as much as possible.

You must be about 5 foot if a tax disc is blocking your view:pac:

That is true. They really should replace the system. Don't see why it can't be a direct debit every month, and the plates get scanned.

Why do you say hide behind it?

The Motor tax is a lot easier now than it used to be. Used to be you had to queue for hours for the dang thing. Now at least you can do it online and it arrives a couple of days later.

But I assume they can't do anything about tax disc until the system for scanning reg no's is actually in operation by the Garda.

The jeep I drive has a small window with factory tint at top the window isnt as big as some cars I have had.

I place the discs at bottom of window but wiper blade does obstruct garda looking at them.

Most garda dont bother as they can see enough of discs to know if in date but every so often they do lift the wiper for closer inspection.

    Or

you could be in a vehicle that is so high up (and you're so tall) that you need that corner to peep through to see bollards, "street furniture" (or children !) when maneuvering to park :pac:

The rules say, you can stick it anywhere on windscreen as long as it is easily seen for insoection....
As to its exact position thats up to you

I have seen people stick them up behind the rear view mirror on the windscreen.

You can't see passed that anyway.

can't you put it on the drivers side? that shouldn't block you

Had that on the previous vehicle...best spot really. But the new one has sensors and gubbins there (+ tint)...no room for disc holders

The LHD Syncro is getting replaced:D (hence all the new questions)... and I certainly couldn't have those stupid things right in front of me while driving

So your answer is to make it worse with a boards sticker there too.

    No.
    My answer is here
Didn't work though, so I gave up, and stopped giving a toss.

Put them on the bottom of the window on the drivers side, but not in the corner,
In line with the dash clocks hump.
Won't be in anyones way then and easily viewed.

I always put mine in the top right, I find ot grand as I usually have the su. Visor down anyway.

At a checkpoint one day the cop was asking me where was my tax etc,. So I pointed it out, oh yeah he said, thats handy!

If you look at tricks and tractors they are all up high and they have to climb up on the bumper with mo hassle. A little strain of the eyes will hardly kill them.

Why not have them on the passenger side, but have them going up the pillar instead of across the bottom of the windscreen. 90° from the normal.

Bottom left - as far down as I can get em - for me.

Agree though that these things should be just linked to the reg and read with an ANPR scanner at this stage though.

In Holland we ditched the "piece of paper behind the windscreen" 20+ years ago.

All systems (motor tax, insurance, nct) are linked. Scan of the license plate and in no time a police car can see if all is well. So no unnecessary delays with check points if you have your **** together.
Register a car in your name and the tax office will send you a bill for motor tax.
I am not happy to pay tax but i am even less happy when i see people with a 2012 tax disc driving around.

And a clear windscreen in front of you too. Because somehow i think my demister has an issue clearing the part above the "newspaper holder"
