Coverage of Elections on RTE NEWS NOW (and others)

TV Coverage of the local elections this year has been terrible. TV3 gave up entirely and since 6.30 there's been little or no coverage what so ever on RTE News Now. You can't even watch the six-one repeat because it would be out of date. So they keep showing RTE News highlights and Nationwide.

There's a huge amount going on around the country. All the local stations are covering it, there are TV bulletins on various other Irish news services but not the Actual Irish PSB that we pay money from. Even IRISH TV made an effort between 7 and 9.

The one Time you want a rolling news service and it's not available. Well done RTE! (right now on RTE NEWS NOW a interview with the director of Godzilla)

Don't expect anything from RTE NN. It is an orphan service.

RTÉ, TG4 and TV3 have all reduced there coverage of the elections from previous years.

RTÉ news now is an app and at this stage should be dropped as a TV channel as it does not function as such.

TV3 seem to be in the process of ditching the news. If they had any sence they would drop Xpose and midday.

TV3, newstalk and the ibi could have worked together to provide excellent tv coverage IMO tv3 should think of commissioning newstalk to produce their news and current affairs.

TV3 I understand as they have no real interest in anything other than X factor and Britain's got talent. They can't ditch Midday or Xpose (yet) because the BAI would complain. Having said that Xpose possibly makes them money with the huge amounts of product placement that goes on.

I think they will buy some sort of news service if they survive. But it won't be anything special. Something as cheap as chips.

The Big problem I have here is RTE. They should have had a full election result service either on TV or Radio last night. They had a web update service but nothing else. You had to go to local radio to get any real information. Even Irish TV had 2 hours on their channel last night between 7 and 9. (it's wasn't great but it was an effort)

This trend of everyone going home at 6 or 7 pm needs to stop. RTE had their coverage on when little was happening, then when all the action started there was no one on air.

RTE News Now must be the only news station in the world that doesn't broadcast live coverage of elections going on in it's own country.

    fyp

RTE NN are costing RTE nearly €1m ayear in channel charges to be on Saorview. If they were not there and RTE jr was dropped (as it earns no money) they would not need mux2 and would save about €4m a year.

The Minister (Pat Rabitte) should allow advertising on RTE NN and allow RTE 3 (or plus) instead of RTE 1+1. RTE NN could also be used for some sport coverage at the weekend.

If RTE NN had an income, it could afford to put on some news coverage of its own.

Until they are allowed advertising on it nothing will change. Pat Rabbitte really made a stupid decision on that one.

I recently got my Multiswitch with 4 sat feeds working again. We compare badly with all small countries. Still no Senate and Dial on Satellite maybe 8 years after internet feed created? Nor on Terrestrial Digital (real tests started Dec 2007 if we ignore BT / Dept East Coast 2006 Shop Window).

There is an information Deficit that benefits the Lunatics and Extremists in Politics.

    I agree with that.

The problem on both counts is that they want to get it on those platforms for free, which 2RN can't do and SES Astra won't do.
