It's been so long since we've rented a car, we're drawing a blank on the general terms.

We will be renting in Dublin in a few weeks and have opted to pay the CDW fee.

As I understand it, with the CDW, the rental company will hold the excess amount on our credit card in case of damage to the car. But I've read dozens of reports of the company trying to force additional insurance on customers.

I know that they will try and up-sell the SuperCDW to us, but am I right in thinking that with the CDW already purchased, there is no additional insurance that we HAVE to purchase (as long as our Credit Card has the balance to cover the excess)

There is no other insurance mandatory but from personal experience, excess insurance is a good thing to have (broken window on rental in Marseille) You don't need to buy it from the rental company, there are companies that sell it independently..

You don't have to purchase anything else.

It's up to you whether you want to cover the excess. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't, depending on the price and other factors. You could also cover the excess through a third party.

Think of it this way, how often do you damage/crash or have issues with your own car ?

If you do the above more than once a year then its probably necessary.

1 insurance claim in 16 years driving......and that was damage done by a mechanic while working on the car.....*sigh*

    Well then .. I wouldn't ...

I treat a rental like my own car and have never had an issue
