upright arcade restore

    Hi all
I'm replacing the jamma wiring in an old machine. I'm stuck on the video wiring :(
I though this would be straight forward but the machine had the old wiring in, what's appears to me a different configuration as the white wire splits off and there are connectors from the board to the old harness which don't appear standard to me. The new harness has all 5 video wires terminating into a connector but the connector won't fit onto the board. I've attached a few pictures of the old setup. Do I need to purchase a connector that will fit into the monitor board?

Also, my psu has two ground terminals but I only have one ground wire connected. Is this ok or do I need to take a ground wire from somewhere else?
    Thanks in advance
    Dex

If you are talking about Red, Green Blue, Vertical Sync and Horizontal Sync, you can just cut the wire coming form the chasis to remove the connector on it and either buy a new connector for it and the jamma RGBVS HS or just twist them around each other and use a connecter block to join them together, ive done that before.

Many thanks Keith, I will give that a go

    That worked, thanks again.

Next problem I have is with the wiring to the coin mech. The jamma harness has fewer wires than what the mech board will take. This was working before the restore and I'd love to get the coin mech going again. Do I need an adapter or can I connect the coin mech wires from the jamma harness to the coin mech? I've attached some pictures.

Is there a part number written on that credit board? pic4
You should only really need the power 12v/5V depending and Gnd and then p1+p2 coin switch from the JAMMA connector
Pic1 where are those 3 green wires coming from?

I cant see a part number in the board but there is one on the coin mech itself: picture attached.

    DN 82127
    MMS 04B3330146

In pic 1, those wires are coming from the new jamma harness.

If you can't find the pinouts for that credit pcb online bes trace back the old harness and work out where each went to, should be pretty easy to figure out.

    I bined it yesterday :(
There are 4 wires which were used on the old one: black, yellow, red & white.

I took off the credit board and see where the wires are going. They are marked:

    White is opo
    Black is com
    Red is 5V
    Yellow is 12v

The new jamma harness has the following wires grouped into a connector.

    Yellow is 12v
Green - number 16 is coin switch 1
    Black is ground number 1

    So yellow 12v is good
    Green goes to opo?
    Black ground goes to com?
I'll connect a new 5V wire from the power supply to 5V.

I've no idea what opo and com do even after a check on Google.

I was wondering what the black device was on the credit board and it's a coin counter. It's at 4,063,725! This is a UK coin mech and if I base it on 10 pence pieces that's £406,372!

Com is ground, I'd assume opo is coin1 but maybe someone else can confirm

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 5,393 Mod ✭✭✭✭Optimus Prime

opo could be a service credit? Just guessing, could be a credit button or something..

Coin mech is now working, but I think I need a new bulb for the coin slot.
    This was the config

    yellow to 12v
Green goes to opo (coin 1)
    Black ground goes to com
new 5V wire from the power supply to 5V.

The credit board is manufactured by DM electronics. The coin mech is by mars ms111.

Now I have another issue :)
I've wired the new joysticks and they don't work but the buttons do. I have them grounded on the com part and colour wire on the NO part on the micro switches.
The buttons are daisy chained after the joystick and they work.
I'm using a blue elf pcb and have read about some issues with the grounds but as the buttons work, I'm not sure it's that.

    Any ideas?
    Any idea what's wrong?

I've heard/had strange happenings with them multiboards, have you the pinouts to check if you are grounding pins which don't need to be grounded and visa/versa, they don't necessarly follow the complete JAMMA standard due to 6 button games running without the extra kick harness
    Have you read this?

Yes I tried that, no luck. I'll try again with a thicker piece.

Looks like many people are having the issue.

I might give this a go:

Going to send the multi board back as they look to be a right pain in the arse.
My jamma harness has no wiring on pin 27. Most pin out diagrams list pin 27 as a ground. The fact that my harness has no wiring on pin 27, is this ok?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,147 ✭✭✭CathalDublin

27/e and 28/f should be grounds, most boards have these joined together so it shouldnt make too much of a difference, did you try ground them and see if the multiboard works?

a lot of boards and adapters have them joined together like so but if its not wired and your board isn't join them you can have anything from non working buttons to missing graphics.

    Thanks Cathal,
So, could I run two ground wires from 27 and e on the harness, splice them together and connect to my power supply?
I'll need to buy some spade connectors and a crimping tool so :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,147 ✭✭✭CathalDublin

Or just short them to 28/f if there is ground there, for test purposes just wrap a piece of bare wire tightly around all 4 points 27,28,e,f

Got it, Can't wait to get home now and try this!

I stared building a spare pc last night with hypenspin, jpac and arcadevga and I need a ps2 to usb adapter now for that.

I've been dying to play 10 yard fight and ghosts and goblins but it's like my machine is tempting me with sweets but won't let me have any :-)

    or this?

If its the second I'm sure I've loads of them if you want one

Jpacs wont work with a converter.(i tired the later one above)
I had to buy a PCI card with 2 ps2 ports on it.

maybe that was just mine tho

Yes the second one as the first one won't send the correct signal, but even with the second one, I've read many reviews of people and issues with these too. All they seem to do is send the power, not the correct pinout signals.

If you have one spare, I'd be glad to borrow it off you until I order the PCI PS2 card? I went looking for one yesterday in Maplins and PC world - waste of time.

It didn't work. I also tried grounding 27/e to the power supply.

    Master of the Universe

I tried out a Blue Elf and it wouldn't work properly at all. My monitor absolutely hated it and went mental.

The only way I could get the monitor to act normally was by keeping the service button pressed in constantly (must have been acting as a ground?)

I actually got a clothes peg and pegged the button down for about 10 minutes while I played some Progear.

Then got a bit worried about the weird frequency noises my monitor was making so decided to stop being an idiot :D

Yep I've read over on J+ them blue elfs are one of the worst multigames, better off going the way you are with a JPac :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 330 ✭✭Dexterm99

    thanks lads
I ordered a ps2 pci card yesterday so hopefully I'll have it in a couple of days.

I've been building the pc in the meantime with Win 7 and now the video output has stopped even when switching cables and cards...

    nothing is going right!! :-)

The PCI card arrived but turns out then that the motherboard had issues. New pc later and I've got hyperspin running with pc connected via jpac to jamma harness.

But I'm thinking about getting a new harness, the generic Chinese one i think might be the cause of some of the joystick and button issues.
