Brake pads on megane are 80%
    Brake discs are 5.5

Is it true you can only buy discs with pads? Are there spurious discs that can be used?

You can buy dics seperately but its best if fitting new discs to fit new pads so they will bed in to match each other.

Reusing old pads is transferring the worn discs issues over to new disc.

ebay and micksgarage.com would have selection of discs suitable for your car or pop around to local motor factors they are often cheaper for heavy item like discs
pads are cheap in the grand scheme of things so pick up a set while doing discs

    Cheers Visual.
This garage were quoting me 375 for parts alone - then 65 euro for fitting. I have looked up online and both discs and pads for this Megane cost 160 euro.
Feel like I'm being ripped off.

Labour rate is good but price for parts must be for genuine renault parts with a mark up.

Bit surprising that mechanic didn't offer you options

you could ask him to fit the parts

I DIYed sons renault megane brakes all round and new front discs

its not a difficult job to tackel with basic tool kit and breaker bar. caliper bracket bolts need a little encouragement.

If your not into DIY shop around for a friendly mechanic to fit the parts for you.

Total spend in my view should be 250 or less thats labour and parts.

Yep, I asked if there were spurious parts and was told they only use genuine main dealer parts for warranty reasons.

What year is the megane ?

I can understand renault not giving a warranty on non renault parts
but these are consumable parts like tyres that are considered to be outside warranty.

I had my fill of main renault dealership when I had a laguna diesel car serviced and repaired by them over 5 years never once passed NCT first time. And they where expensive with both servicing and repairs.

Its what encourage me to DIY
have my Jeep now 5 years and DIY myself
its been cheaper to maintain in 5 years than what renault dealer took off me in 1

I rate the brembo better than OEM would even go as far to say its nearly an upgrade

I thought they were a hell of a difference. Id normally go for ebc but im so converted to brembo. Like if a spurious pad is 40 ebc is probably 45-50 and brembo 50-60 but there very worth it.

in discs and pads its only about 30 of a difference

It's an 05 Megane. I haven't had it serviced in a Renault dealership since Bill Cullen closed. Have been going to a reputable garage until tjis year when I decided to try one of the quick fit type places. Service was 100 euro cheaper and I have only done 4k this year.

Can anyone recommend a garage that would not rip me off? I can buy full rensult rear disc kit for 150 online and pads for 10. This garage want over 400.

So its not a Renault garage I am at.

Renault warranty is up on car long ago so I guess the garage was implying they can't warranty parts that they haven't a big greedy markup on.

There is lots of indy garages out there that are honest and will do it much cheaper.
Depending on where you live work someone could give recommendation of garage local.

I checked with a Renault main dealer. They charge 390 all in, so this Atlas place are charging 350 for parts alone! I pointed out to them that they are overcharging. They didn't seem too concerned. How can they justify charging more than the main dealer? Sure a customer may as well go with the main dealer then!

Got another quote today of 240 for parts and labour using Renault parts.

atlas rely on customer not knowing anything and charge a pretty penny. Ive used them for tyres and alignment in the past and they arent the cheapest nor the best.

240 is a good price and its a strait forward job.
    Good result shopping around.

It depends on the Renault, I have an 04 Megane and the brake disks on some models are a single unit that is integrated with the wheel bearing, which is why they can be so expensive. My mechanic replaced the unit for 260 last year, but the girlfriends parents bought the unit themselves for around 230. It's one of the many reasons why I'll never buy a Renault again.

Yep, mine is the integrated unit. But you can buy the integrated unit for 75 euro per wheel.

Unfortunately I needed the full set!

Isn't the full thing the integrated unit with bearings, pads and discs?

I meant for each of the wheels

Easy to damage the bearings pressing them out.

better off to put new bearings in while your at it.

You have all been really helpful on this thread. Think I'll go with the 240 offer. It is a garage we have used before when we had a breakdown - was recommended by AA.
