My 1st ever post (no longer a lurker) be gentle...

I think I've got cab fever and I am seriously considering building my own woody Hyperspin cab. I'd love to learn from your lessons learned (the hard way).

With the benefit of hindsight, what would you do differently if you had your time over? Design, materials, components, setup etc.

If your going to do a self build it'll be more expensive.
2/3 times the price of buying a cab!
Unless your a cabinet maker by trade or know someone.
Deffo buy a jamma cab with a monitor and use that to start!

A cheap upright cab in good nick, with the monitor working, easily converted with little investment and all the time afterwards to tidy up the bits that need attention, while in the meantime you're playing games on it.
    Perfect.

What's the basis of your cost analysis?

    Self build = Eur X
    Conversion = Eur Y

Roughly speaking, what's the breakdown of the self build costs?

Have you self built and converted, and therefore prefer conversion based purely on cost, or other factors?

I know a carpenter who should be able to help me out. I haven't asked yet, but I'd guess I'd get mates rates. I'm thinking of suggesting building 2 at once; one for me and one for him. In my brain this makes sence; all the setup done, may as well run a second set of materials through the process. However this could mean double trouble.

    Thanks.

Where should I look besides adverts.ie, eBay, done deal?

Also, as a complete noob, what should I watch out for with cab selection to ensure I get a both a good deal and a good cab?

Size is the main thing you should be wary of. There are cabs in all shapes and sizes, so you need to decide the size that's right for you. After that (I think) you should look at control panels, the ones with more buttons the better, so you're looking at something like a Street Fighter type cab with 6 buttons for each player.

If the buttons and sticks are in good order then all the better, saves you buying new ones (or at least many new ones ... you still might need a couple for menu exiting purposes and the likes something like hyperspin).

Depending on the type of screen you want I guess the monitor is the next thing to be looking at, cos you can hook up a PC to an arcade monitor if you want, or you could just put in an LCD.

I myself bought an old Supreme Cabinet (6 button) for 125 a few years back, it was in prerrty good condition and playable right off the bat (though the kick harness wasn't in great shape so only 4 of the 6 buttons worked) after a clean up. All I ended up doing was buying new joysticks/buttons and some wiring and she was refurbished and ready to rock ... after that I got a 450 in 1 gamebox and that's my set up ever since. It's still a Jamma cab by the way, the only difference is that I have a button set up to act as a coin mech.

It cost me around 300 all told I guess (not including the gamebox). Replacing buttons and sticks can be costly, so beware :)

The monitor is key. I spent too much time looking at an LCD monitor.
And every bloody time I looked at it , it annoyed me.
Have a CRT screen now and it really does make a difference.
