    Hi,

Does anyone know where I can get the break down on the price of petrol e.g.) how much excise duty, tax etc?

I have tried to search it myself but I didn't get far :(

Anyone remember the 6 cent/litre they added when the recession hit? It's still there and will be as long as everyone forgets about it  Forgot to mention that's 6 cent + vat.

He's probably talking about the margins of 11 c/litre but failing to realise that the margin is for both retailer and distributor.

government is grabbing 2/3rds of the price of fuel.
    Extortionate motor tax and tolls

    its depressing thinking about it

Would someone mind doubling checking a rough calculation for me. I'm trying to work out how much it would cost in petrol to do 2 return trips to Galway from Sligo.

Car 1.4 Focus. Petrol in Sligo around 152.9 - 154.9 at the moment.

    I worked out 'roughly' 85 miles Sligo - Galway at @ 9 miles per litre. So I got 85/9 = 9.4*€1.53 = €14.45*2 = €28.90 (1 return trip) *2 = €58.00.

Does €60ish sound about right for 2 return trips Sligo - Galway. No extra passengers, just a driver. 03 year.

Interesting as I do a similar bit of tripping every month or so here in the UK.

My 94 year old neighbour goes to visit an ex neighbour of ours who lives just under 90 miles away. I usually drop him off on a Friday and collect him on the following Monday, using my wife's Ka as there is not a lot of chance of getting him in and out of the Exige.

Start out with Ka just under full, fill up after I drop him off, somewhere around £13. When I go back I fill up again, somewhere in the low 20s, say £24. Total paid out for fuel about £37 but don't forget that there is still the run home so add another £13, total £50, a shed over €60 so pretty similar.

Notes: The Ka is the old type with the old crossflow engine. I think that fuel is a bit more expensive here than in Ireland. In addition, I use the BP 97 octane as it is supposed to be alcohol free, in deference to the seals in thhe fuel system of an old car. My journey is about two thirds motorway doing an indicated 80 mph where possible.

Yes your calculations are correct. It would be cheaper to take a bus.

Cheers for verifying that. I would get the bus but the times don't suit and wen if they did I get atrocious motion sickness on buses. So whatever the cost I'd definitely be driving. Tried every tablet under the sun to no avail, guaranteed barf bag.

9 miles per litre is 41 mpg.

    85 miles x 2trips = 170 miles.

    OK,

170miles/41mpg*4.54*€1.50 = €28 ish, yes calculations are correct.

As a curiocity in my LPG'd 3.0 Lexus Auto with the same citeria and I dont drive light footed;)

    170miles/21mpg*4.54*€0.81 = €29 ish

Thats makes me happy that I have around same fuel costs as a 1.4 Focus
