Jesus. If it's possible she should sue them until their wallets bleed out.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

It's time this sort of stigma was stamped out.

Remember folks, it's the daily mail so you need to disregard this entirely. Problem?

She should definitely seek legal advice. Might not be feasible to sue, should still be researched though.

    Definitely has a case.

As a intermittent depression-sufferer, I don't disclose it in medicals. I know that's wrong but there you go. It would nice and all to crusade for acceptance but I need to work so never would. And it does affect your chances at a company and your reputation if it's later found out. That's the reality as it stands now.

I hope she takes them to court and wins though. Being down so much money and losing employment over it is unacceptable.

Seems perfection in every aspect (both physical and mental) is a requirement to be employed by those people

According to the article, Emirates gave a valid reason -
However, the Dubai-based company withdrew the job offer regardless. Because air hostesses travel across the world for their job, it is not always clear whether they are covered by UK employment law.

I can't see any legal challenge being any way successful.

Well, not with that attitude. :P

Unacceptable reason, no matter to where the employees travel, they have a base, as does the company.

NO company can escape employment law.

    what was the valid reason?

Wow as soon as I read the headline I had a specific airline in mind, and lo and behold it's the same one.

I know a person who works for them, said that they provide counsellors/ psychologists for anyone on staff who needs them. One of his colleagues was issued a formal warning by management over things he had disclosed in counselling, and was told that it wasn't private as they were paying for it. Pretty terrible stuff, but seeing as they are based in Dubai they can probably get away with pretty much anything.

Employment laws though vary from country to country.

The woman had a history of suffering from depression and due to the fact that employment laws vary from one country to another, her employment rights may differ based on her medical history.

    Czar,

Are you saying the reason is valid for practical legal reasons or are you saying the reasoning is valid for ideal reasons?

It does, but the company has its base somewhere.

I'm only going on what I'm reading in the article but their reasons to me look like valid practical legal reasons. I know in Ireland and the UK Employers are not allowed discrimate on mental health grounds which can be considered a disability, but I'm not sure about employment equality legislation in Dubai where Emirate Airlines are based.

Dubai strikes again. In fairness there's not a lot we can do legally but we can wait until civilisation reaches the country. Don't travel that airline is the only thing I can say there or better yet stay out of Dubai. Seriously regressive country.

Hope she gets a lot of support. She's on breakfast TV tomorrow i think.
I'll try and avoid Emirates from now anyway.

One of my biggest worries with running a story like this is that some young people with depression will read this and decide not to seek help in case it harms their future prospects.

    Emirates spokesperson:
We are unable to comment on individual recruitment cases.

AH spokesperson (that would be me):
You can certainly comment on company policy of refusing to employ anyone who has the honesty to state that they have suffered from depression in the past.

Go on, Emirates. Where do you stand on this?

Well I would simply not tell anyone If I had to work in a country as regressive as that.

How many people would tell here, you don't have to tell your employer.
