Handicap Adjustments at Away Clubs

Played in an open last Friday in Corballis with dar_cool, and ended up scoring only 26 points. Entered the card in anyway as I don't believe in tearing up cards just because you had a bad day. Anyway, I ended up getting 0.1 back on the handicap which I expected. Not sure if that would have happened if I just binned the card?

It was the first time I'd ever played there, found the rough a few times and lost the ball nearly every time, so I was punished fairly severely for a few loose shots. Ironically I felt like I had played fairly well. Thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back.

Having thought about it afterwards, should I have got a 0.1 back? Technically, yes of course. But I'm thinking more about whether the rule is fair. Surely it's far more difficult to get into the buffer on an away course?

If I play well and beat the CSS, by all means cut me. Does anyone else think that 0.1's should not be applied for away players outside the buffer?

    Just curious!

    Nope.

It's certainly a tougher ask on Away course BB.
There is such a thing as an "Away CSS", does what it says on the tin but it is dependant on 12 (or 20?) away players entered.

It certainly makes it a lot fairer I feel.

Played in an open recently and there was an Away CSS. There were 3 shots in the difference.

The Away CSS will usually catch it.
Will +1 the amount of time i have walked off Corballis feeling i had played well and struck the ball well with 28 to 30 points.

20 I think and I've never played in an open with one ever in play.
Agree with OP though, it should be considered harder for unfamiliar visitors to score and therefore an adjustment to CSS for the visitor

When you play in competitions on the continent (places that use the European rather than GB&I system), courses have a "slope rating" and visitors get an extra shot / extra shots.

I always thought it was a good idea when certain clubs gave visitors a courtesy shot in Wednesday invitational fourballs.

Never really occurred to me before now and initially I was thinking 'go away will ya' but you're actually right. You see some courses will have the away CSS for opens. Should be mandatory. Of course someone playing a course for the first time won't know the course let alone the breaks on the green and the scores should reflect. If they do, apply it.
