you don't need to do anything until such time as you come to put it back on the road. Then, I'm afraid you'll have to jump through hoops with paperwork and taxes, not to mention Commissioners of Oaths etc.

A US car will attract VAT and VRT

Thanks for that, but I would prefer to get this headache out of the way before I start to restore the car,I guess the vrt would be €200, vat on what? Transport/purchase price/value?

    Thanks

you can't VRT it unless it's a complete viable car.

VAT would be payable on the value here plus the transport costs AFAIK

So I have to wait till it is restored so the value would be a lot more then its worth in its current state , and to pay vat on transport I didn't need.
    thats a bit cheeky

Sound like iam going to have some fun ahead !!

There should be no big "Hoops" needed, The import tax and Vat are/were payable on the U.S. purchase price+ carriage costs. Both of these WOULD of been paid at point of entry or else the vehicle would not of gotten of the docks. So the only payment that is needed is the VRT (@200euro) if over 30 years old. But you will need to a copy of the reciept or document from the Port Authority verifying the Vat + Import tax payment. Now if the person your buying it from knows which port it came in through that won't be a problem to get given you have the Chassis number (or better still if you have the Licence plate number?), just give the exact port a ring and it'll be possible to get the copy. Possible ports? Dublin/Cork/ Dover/Felixstowe

Thanks that might be an option, I am still trying to get more information about the car, I have now be told that it might have been purchased in the uk and sent over, as to if it has been registered in the uk is another story, as I said the only numbers I have are chassis/ engine etc, would the dvla be able to confirm based on the above numbers

    Thanks

Yeah the DVLA will tell you if it was registered or not,and if it was they'll issue you with a Certificate of permanent Export. If it hasn't been registered over there then it'll be a case of contacting the UK ports with the info (numbers) you have.

You could just chance rocking up to your local vrt/nct office and ask their opinion, might catch them on a "good" day and push it through for you without the correct paperwork. At the end of the day every vehicle is entitled to a registration number

If it is in fact UK registered, you are in luck. If it isn't it is quite easy to bring a foreign car into the country undetected and it doesn't mean for a second that the VAT has been paid.

Is the vrt on importing vehicles going to be scrapped?
