And the perpetrator would probably have 60 + convictions. I say 2 years but it could just be a suspended sentence...

So refreshing seeing justice for an Irish person abroad - pity we don't get the same in our own country.

Man gets 90 years for attack on Armagh woman Natasha McShane

Note for Irish criminal justice system - you want results this is how you get it. Not your slap on the wrist revolving door schenadigans.

Results? You do realise the US has one of the highest prison populations per capita and one of the highest recidivism rates in the world.

The US system should never be used as a model to fix flaws in the Irish system. A better question to consider is the likelihood of such a crime being committed here as opposed to the US? Crimes prevention strategies are a must and long prison sentences durations are among the most expensive and inefficient.

Justice for the families is important. But what's more important is supports for victims and their families and friends, and plans to prevent the crimes happening in the first place. Deterrence polices do not work and any emotional satisfaction they achieve comes far too late at far too many human costs.:(

Absolutely horrible experience for that family to go through. Any criminal justice system needs to be tailored towards reducing the number of these incidents. Those are the best results.

90, or 900 years in the grander scheme of things it makes no difference. Even with the extraordinary costs of death penalty appeals, it would be far cheaper to just kill the perpetrator. Not acceptable, but sentences like the OP are rare for a reason. They're extraordinarily expensive.

Then again, it's a very good thing this wasn't the sentence: http://www.delawareonline.com/story/news/crime/2014/03/28/sunday-preview-du-pont-heir-stayed-prison/7016769/

Justice is a very weird thing.
