Alloy refurbishment?

Comments

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 564 ✭✭✭fmcg_scribe

Having looked at the ad, "refurbishment" is not the most accurate description for the service being offered - "wheel paint restoration" or "wheel respray" might be more accurate.

The word "refurbishment" usually suggests repairing any cracks or buckles on a wheel, dipping the wheel in acid, respraying the entire wheel, and adding lacquer (depending on the finish required).

That's a big difference hence the differ in cost between mobile alloy wheel refurbishment companies that usually focus on paint/lacquer problems and professional alloy wheel refurbishment companies that provide a drop-off service for both trade and non-trade customers.

Dar83 on here managed to get a group deal for wheel wizards. His looked pretty damn good afterwards. Proper refurb as well, not just refinished.

    They're based in Finglas, Dublin.

How much of a discount did he get? Looked at the website and they aren't cheap

    Rip off or done correctly?

Any one I know would not look beyond wheel wizards in finglas, but you pay for what you get really.

Done correctly and not a rip off, been quoted €300 which I think is excessive, will have a look at wheel wizards cheers.

TrimTech did my oem alloys on my GTD. They were pretty corroded in parts and they did a lovely job. Was not cheap though and took 3 days.

To be honest I'd put €300 in a cheap category, if it's a proper refurbish and not just painting.

Rim soloutions in Parkwest, did my friends 17" wheels, superb job and was circa €350 which is good value in this type of work.

You're probably right I just got a bit of a shock at the prices! I've emailed them pics of the wheels so hopefully they can fit them in soon and I'll report back with how it went, thanks for the reply.

Are the alloys a genuine part .The reason i say this is i had a set of wolfrace that would have needed a bit of attention. It would have been as cheap to replace them as to repair them but they were a cheap alloy.
300 would be fairly standard price to get them done.
When you break down the price its 75 an alloy. If its a full refurb, repairs/welding /dipping /painting, it takes time to do . It wouldnt take long for the lads at it to clock up a few hours per alloy.
Sure it would cost 15 euros a wheel to get a tyre fitter to take off the tyres and put them back on and balance them

I bought them online off a company up north, They aren't alloys from
VW if that's what you mean? Not sure how I check what make they are but if you can assist me with that I'll have a look!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,835 ✭✭✭9935452

    Thats exactly what i meant.
    How much did they cost?
They could give you a price on a new set with or without tyres.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,562 ✭✭✭Sono

Think I paid between €6-700 for them, suppose I can bring them to the place in Finglas and see if they are worth fixing or better off getting a new set.

Think about it this way. if it is 600 for a set of alloys with tyres. tyres are most likely worth 250 to 300 making the alloys 300/350 for the set.
Flog your own with tyres for 200 making the new wheels very cheap and you have span new wheels/tyres on the car.

I'll be interested to hear how you get on. I'm thinking of having a refurb and change of colour on the MX-5 wheels.

Anybody any opinions on going down the gunmetal or silver chrome route for a bright red car? I think it'd look great, but the missus (whose car it is) isn't convinced.

I changed the colour on my stock GTD wheels from the usual silver to Agate Grey. Altered the whole look of the car in my opinion (Not the best photo though).

Are they the factory 5 spoke (mk2?) Gunmetal or black might look good on red i would think. I have a set of the arctic wheels which I was going to get done soon as their looking a little tired.

    It's a 2006 Mk 3 with the factory 5 spoke alloys shown below ...

    11ihnjk.jpg

I've seen some pictures of cars on the net with very dark grey or even black wheels and I think that's a step too far, but a lighter gunmetal would suit it I think. It'd mean the brake dust on the front wheels wouldn't show up as much either :D

That looks about the right shade IMO. Where did you get them done?

Ah in that case I'd go on the conservative side. Nice 5 btw, looks well kept.

There is a place in Limerick that will shot blast and respray a set of wheels for €200. I haven't seen any of their work though. For €200 it would be worth a punt.

Wheel Doctor maybe. Its probably only shot blast and paint , not including repairs or taking the tyres off and on again and balancing them

Had them done at Trimtech in Swords. Not cheap but the work was outstanding.

Yeah and so I was led to believe until it came to actually booking it in, disappointing really as I was all set to go but will look elsewhere I think.

Could you not do them one wheel at a time. Lob on the spare and give them an alloy. 2 to 3 weeks and they are done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,562 ✭✭✭Sono

Spares only a donut so not really an option no, I'll get it done elsewhere sure no hassle but wheel wizard was closer to home.

Its cheaper for them to shot blast, prep and spray all of the wheels together. I had the same situation but they wanted more money to do one wheel at at time.

Ive a mk5 Gti with 18" Monza's and its €500 to refurb them, takes three days too. Just replaced wishbones etc so its on the long finger.

A mk5 with polished monza's looks great so ill do it in a month or two.

Thats a lot of money, are they in really bad shape? 500 and selling your old ones could be put towards a set of new wheels.

I got two done recently. Above thread has before & after shots. Cost 120 for both and I'm very happy with the result.

The previous owner skimped on tyres and got a narrower option so they're scratched fairly bad from the kerbs. I might check that place that Tazium mentioned but i suppose a second hand set might make more sense.
