US emigration 1865

I have a great grandfather who emigrated with his family from Ireland to New York in 1865. I know, because the 1870 US census suggests so, and a daughter was born in Dublin in 1865 before they left.

I have not been able to find them on any passenger lists though. I did have an Ancestry sub, now expired, and they didn't appear there either.

Is it possible they emigrated and don't appear on passenger lists anywhere, or is there anywhere likely I might find them? I'd be interested to find the ship they went on, or the date, if such a thing were remotely possible. Any other leads?

I'm in the same boat as you (excuse the pun). My ancestors left Kerry for Canada in the early 1850s. We know their last place of residence, how long the journey took (personal reminiscences of my ggggrandmother), where they landed and conditions of the journey. What we don't know is from where the ship left, nor the name of the ship. I've exhausted every avenue over many years and to date, nothing. I won't give up (I'll never do that!) but more and more I'm resigned to the fact that I may never know. And if so - c'est la vie!

This was the forerunner to Ellis Island.

I have searched everything I can find, but nothing shows up. His name was Richard Keddy. Keddy is a rare and unusual name, which helps, but could be found possibly as Keddy, Keady, Kady, Keddie, Cady, Caddy. I have tried them all. The family were Richard and Anne, and children Margaret and Joseph. They emigrated almost certainly specifically in 1865 or 1866.
