It depends on the car really.
What car do you have? How old? Last service?

05 Opel Astra. Last service Nov 2013. 157,000km, has 169,000km now.

It depends on where you are, Advance Pitstop varies from place to place depending on who's working there.
Some of them are grand, some of them not so good.

i'll be just as cheap to take it to a trusted small mechanic, who'll do a good job for you, for a good price. Ask family and Friends for a recommendation, there's always one locally.

Another one of these get you in the door schemes aimed at drumming up business. No profit in doing €59 services all day long (and that is even before the Living Social take their slice of the pie) unless the premise is to sell other parts and services to you while you are there. Not saying there is anything wrong with that but people just need to be aware.

I'd also pray that your average joe doesn't think that a €59 generic oil and filter change is sufficient maintenance of their car.

Ahhh but €59 is wayyyy overpriced.

And they're on the Naas road too, so you know it'll be quality.

Well care to suggest what a DECENT service would offer in comparison, and what price/place are we talking?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 5,737 ✭✭✭MidlandsM

Well, it depends what parts the car needs. Then labour. Then vat .

So I'm still waiting for a price, and a location...... ???

I'm not a psychic, I don't know in advance what parts my car needs but for a run of the mill service, to keep it relatively maintained is really what I'm asking for. After the last service, drop links and gearbox seal were replaced.

Never mind. Hadn't realised it was that difficult to answer and thought there might be a 'ballpark' figure for services. Can't remember what I paid the last time.

I'll just chance my arm with a local garage.

Okay. Wipers were also changed so they're okay. New engine 2 years ago. Decent nick (so I think) so will see what the service brings. I was just wondering if €59 was alright for a run of the mill one, as the last one was €179!!!!!!!! (I just checked!) And that was without anything 'extra'!!

You haven't provided a location either OP.

For the small service (oil, oil filter, air filter) it's around 100 just about everywhere but price can vary between 100 and 400 depending on servcie items so it's worth it to shop around and get a few opinions and quotes.
59 sounds good, just make sure they use the right oil for your can, this will be in the owner's manual.

Thats the problem with cheap service deals like this. They just lump in generic mineral 5w40 from their big drum reserves regardless of the manufacturer specifics. Not a chance in hell would a garage put in proper VW or BMW synthetic spec 5w30 for a cheap service deal.

    CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!

It states 10w 40 will be used on your car and others will carry a surcharge, those in the know will see there is money to be made as the average punter will view it as a service those a bit wiser will just see it as a oil change. Also great opportunity to up sell to unwitting punters.

Most garages euphemistically call an intermediate oil and filter change a "service" these days, charge € 100+ for it, and then try to up sell from there.
So it's a good deal if you just need an intermediate oil change, 10w 40 oil suits you, and you know you don't need anything else done and stick to your guns.

It cost me double that to change the oil and filter on my own car with my own labour, they must be recycling the engine oil.

I recently had a full service done to my 2001 Honda Accord at Advance Pitstop in Dundrum - I recently purchased their loyalty card and it is handy for me to drop the car there with my work. I had a problem after picking the car up with steam coming from the overflow radiator tank and took the car back - the manager himself took responsibility for the problem and it was dealt with very effectively - turns out the radiator cap had rusted and wasn't holding the pressure - the manager found a second had cap for me and the problem was fixed - I am very happy with how I was treated at this garage - I would recommend them to anyone.

Actually I am registered since 2011 - the head gasket is fine on my car - I just wanted to give credit where credit is due - I am happy with the service and customer service I received.
