Make sure everything electrical works and if not ask why not

Otherwise quite the tidy car (on LPG???)

Ya, the 'gas' comment is funny. I don't know.

There's this diesel one on carzone:

Probably someone who watches too much American TV.

They're a really nice comfortable car. I used to commute to work in one every day in the early 2000's. Mostly standard 406 parts bar the body panels. Just make sure the electrics work and bear in mind that the a/c might need a re-gas (you'll need it with leather).

Are you prepared for the €951/year of road tax that comes with the HDi? You also have to consider that the HDi will have a dual mass flywheel, high pressure diesel injection pump and diesel particulate filter which are all expensive failures in any car and potentially terminal in a car this old. Unless your mileage warrants it then I'd suggest sticking to the simpler petrol model.

I'd be prepared for the tax to be honest, but I'm very aware of the problems with regards to a diesel compared to a petrol. I'm going to be doing a fairly long commute from Sept-June, hence my tendency for the diesel.

The tax isn't much extra for a diesel and the 406 Coupe will chew up the kilometers on a long commute. I think those PSA 2.2l HDi engines were pretty good but I'd be wary of that early diesel particulate filter. Really nice cars and they still look great. Best of luch with it.

Hardly think an 02 car has a dpf?

They do, the HDi was one of the very first engines to come equipped with a DPF, or FAP as PSA called it :pac: this was to meet euro emissions crap for 2004, hence those cars will have had it since about late 2001

So the 2.2 has it. It's also a 16v unit so is plenty able to move. Don't know if it suffers the same crank pulley issues as the 2.0 but apart from that can't think of anything off hand of concern on the engine itself

If only those coupes came with an XUD....

Just outrageous... I can't put into words how much our tax system frustrates me.

Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread. Maybe the Mods could move if so? But I'm caught between purchasing similar. Either a petrol or diesel 406 Coupe or this http://www.autosource.ie/viewanad.php?ad_id=1050149&r=%26amp%3Br%3D a 407 Coupe 2.2 petrol 2007. Any opinions on this car? Hope that's ok OP?

If I was on the lookout for a coupe I'd opt for one of these over a 406.

Yes they are a bit more bland looking, but they are a good bit better built and just as nice inside IMO.

What's that opinion based on, have you ever owned a 406 coupe....?

Think the OP wants a diesel too, was there a diesel option with that Accord?

you'll never get a honda in that condition or even close to it. a beautiful looking car and it does have the edge over the 406 coupe in looks like but at this stage they are as rare as hens teeth.

seen a very clean example for sale in Dublin last year. 2001, 80k odd miles and a full service history afaik. An original Irish car too

I like coupés, but I'd never ever buy a diesel one

At least I asked the OP's permission to go OT.... and not by much.

Looks like I may be going for one of these after all, herself's 06 astra gave up this eve. Some pipe blew out and the engine wasn't getting oil. It was only serviced two weeks ago and I'm ****ing raging!

Back to the topic, I think I'd go foe the 2.2 diesel due to my mileage. Ri, what are you thinking?

    Bad luck on that :(

I'm strongly thinking 407 2.2 petrol as I do small miles. I had a 2.0 16v Xantia II a few years ago and they're a nice engine in 3rd and 4th, if a little noisy when pushed. Also closely watching a 2.0 16v 406 Coupé too. We'll see how things go. Like you, I have a fire under me. Have a load of suspension work and rear brake pipes to replace on my Xantia. Have her 9 years and taken her to a mild 212K miles. Lots of life yet but such good value out there now; so I'm having a serious look.

If you're up for remapping that 2.2HDi, you'd be looking at some rocketship! www.hdi-tuning.co.uk

Jesus, I don't think I'd trust myself in it!!

Here looking at a5's for herself! They're dear the b@#$ ards!!

I want a car for her that's solid as a rock as she does fairly big mileage and I don't want another phone call like this eve.

Talking to my mechanic this eve, he's not too happy about my 406 idea, I don't know why, it'll prob mean more work for him..

I had a 2.0 petrol 406 coupe a few years ago. I'd echo what has already been said electrics, electrics, electrics - check everything electric!

I had a few gremlins in mine; mainly to do with the Air Con, air recirculation, electric windows, electric seats and radio working only when they felt like it. The electrics are a minefield so when something does go wrong it can be a heart breaking, hair pulling and tear inducing experience trying to fix it.

They like the juice as well, don't expect to get over 6l per 100km out of it.

They are a lovely car to drive but, personally, I found that mine needed constant tweaking to ensure it was running smoothly, but when it was running just right it was a cracking car. The styling has held up well and they still catch my eye on the road today.

In the end it was the weekly work that got the better of me and I decided to get rid.

Had one too, for 6/7 years, 2.0L petrol with all the bells and whistles. Loved it and it never gave a days problem, nothing, sailed through NCT's, and no electrical issues whatsoever. Lovely car to drive. Maybe I was lucky. To the OP, this car was not hard on petrol (relatively speaking) and was quite good on long runs, from memory it did approx. 550 miles to a full tank (70 litres I think) and city driving rush hour was about 350 miles to the tank. My E60 service costs are off the charts in comparison!
