Camera Advice Needed

I'm looking to pick up a new camera for my other half. She used to own a Sony A330 (unfortunately it was stolen a few months ago). Should I stick with Sony or is there a better choice?

She always says Canon are better but she's used a few of her friends cameras (not sure which models) and surprisingly found that her ols A330 was actually better.

My budget is €400-€600. She still has her Sony zoom lens (only purchased last year-thankfully wasn't stolen) so with that in mind, should I stick with Sony?

She's a very good photographer-natural ability. At the time, the A330 was purchased as a stepping stone camera but over the years she has become very good.

Any advice on what I should get (and where-possible Conns Cameras?) would be greatly appreciated.

If I were buying canon in that price range I might have a look at second hand 40d/50d or a 600d. How much money you'd stand to lose having to sell the Sony lens second hand and whether it's worth it is a decision you'll have to arrive on yourselves. (For pointers it may help if you list which lens it is that you have.)

Is the SLT A58 a big step up from the A330? What's the general consensus on this camera? (sorry, I don't know much about cameras....just the purchaser).

is it a surprise for her? I'd try and get her input if possible. She might have more ideas of what she likes / dislikes with the few years under her belt
