Hi- Im driving a 2010 Outlander 2.0 DI-D. I left the car into be serviced and was told a noise from the clutch was worrying and as such they wanted to remove the gearbox and clutch to investigate. Report back is that the pressure plate has failed and in turn has damaged the gearbox housing, leaking oil. Garage are recommending that the car needs a new gearbox along with new clutch.

Does it sound feasible that a broken pressure plate could lead to knock on effect of needing a new gearbox??

It could happen if a bit flew from the pressure plate and bust the gearbox housing or a piece sticking out could rub off the inside of the casing.

You shouldnt need a complete gearbox though the casing should be available just transfer all the shafts over.

Thanks - Im told the gearbox casing had lead to the gearbox fluid leaking, so would it be reasonable to presume that further gearbox trouble resulted from this that would make it possible that a complete gearbox is needed?

Really all depends what the noise was that they heard. Was the gearbox driven with no oil in it or did they hear a noise in the clutch and discovered the leak when they stripped it down.

If its a case the noise was coming from the gearbox probably as well to replace it.

Had a clutch fail resulting in a new gearbox for a Renault Laguna 2004 about 3 months ago.

Clutch was slipping a bit and one day as I tried to drive around a roundabout there was a big bang and that was the end of that!

New gearbox and they replaced the clutch plate too I think . Traded the car in 2 weeks later even though it was driving better than it ever had before,

The car was driving fine, and gearbox was smooth to operate immediately before they stripped it down, but it was noticed at this stage it was leaking fluid.

Really depends on how much oil was left in the box.

Get some pictures from them of the damage its impossible to say for sure unless your actually doing the job.

Thanks for advise, I'll follow up and expect the worst

I'm sure it would be cheaper to actually repair the current casing via TIG welding or similar unless it's really badly weakened.
