Rightio, I'm off to Portugal in 2 weeks with Aer Lingus and I've not checked in yet because I'm stingy and I don't want to pay extra for seats.

Can someone confirm if you definitely do not need to pay once you check in within the 30 hour time frame? I just wanna be positive on it.

    Also,

This is my first time flying without my parents, so after I check in, do I check in my luggage and then head through security?

    Thanks all.

You can check in online within 30 hours or you could use the self service machines at the airport. You don't have to pay.

After you've checked in you go to Baggage Drop, check in your luggage and go through security. If you're any way confused Aer Lingus always seem to have someone around to help.

OP, the 30 hours rule is for free seat selection so once you're inside that window you can check-in online, select your seat for free and if you're checking in a bag I wouldn't bother printing the boarding pass at home, you can get it when checking in in the airport so having checked-in at home you can elect to collect the boarding pass in the airport, saves printer ink and it's one less thing to forget to bring with you. Just hand your passport to the person at the check-in desk and they will find your booking, you don't need to print the booking confirmation e-mail.

If you are carry-on only then there is a case for printing the boarding pass at home in which case you can go straight to the security queue when you get to the airport though if you're not flying at a peak time of the day it's no big deal to print the boarding pass from one of the green self-service machines.

    Thank you!

Would I be right in saying its the exact same coming back?

The rules are the same except obviously you will need either a smartphone or access to a PC in the hotel. Or you could get someone at home to do it the day before you're due to fly home, they will need to enter your surname, the booking reference no. and the airport you're flying from. As you're flying from Portugal, it will need to be done between 30 hours and 4 1/2 hours before the flight. If you're not bothered about seat selection, just show up at the airport and go to the check-in desk.

Online check-in with free seat selection is called 'web check-in'....

    Web check-in timing guidelines:

    • Web check-in for travel from Dublin, Shannon, Cork, Belfast, London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Bristol, Kerry, Isle of Man and Waterford is available from 30 hours in advance up to 2 hours before your scheduled departure time.
    • Web check-in for travel to and from New York (JFK), Boston, Chicago and Orlando is available from 24 hours in advance up to 2 hours before your scheduled departure time.
    • Web check-in for travel from all other airports is available from 30 hours in advance up to 4hours and 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time.

To the best of my knowledge every airport that Aer lingus fly to/from have those green kiosks ... so you can always check-in for free AT THE AIRPORT. There will also be a desk of some description. I don't know if Aer lingus charge for desk check-in (like Ryanair do) But there's no need to panic.

I have flown with Aer lingus as recently as Mar 2014 .. I have never checked-in online for Aer Lingus.

You'll still have to check in (for free) at a counter in many UK, Continental & US airports (LHR / JFK excepted). You are able to use some kiosks of partner airlines on flights that operate as a codeshare, e.g. KLM at Schipol.

There was none in Venice airport on Easter Sunday last, just two long queues for the Aer Lingus check-in desks downstairs.

Realistically they couldn't possibly have kiosks in every airport they fly to.

Schipol's a funny one. I was there just over a year ago but I can't remember what was odd about it  I think I HAD to check in at the desk rather than use a kiosk...

Oh and they were going to weigh my hand luggage there, so if you've flying from Schipol don't take the pee with the weight of your hand luggage (mine was probably close enough to the max but when the guy saw small me lifting it with ease as if it had a book, a sandwich and pillow in it he decided it must be light :P )

None in prague, every airline except Aer Lingus, had to go to the desk.

    Does seem unusual that.

I'm through Schipol frequently enough, both as a connecting passenger and AMS-DUB point to point & only ever use the KLM kiosks for boarding passes with EI. I think they even have self-service bag drops, though I don't have anything other than hand luggage mercifully enough.

Can be a bit of a trek to the Aer Lingus gates in pier D, but I do find Schipol an agreeable place to transit overall.

shows though how different destinations are different.

Munich has no kiosks yet for the morning flight when theres 2 desks for both Dublin and Cork combined you'd still have no queue - but thats because (outside of holiday season anyhow) the vast majority are checked in online and travelling light either on a business trip or short weekend stay.

Venice though would have loads checking in luggage for long stays, and no doubt planes to/ from portugal would be exactly the same.

No kiosks at Lisbon airport either (where OP could potentially be flying to). All they had were multi-carrier kiosks but Aer Lingus wasn't supported so had to queue for about 30mins at a 2 person check-in desk.

We are traveling to Orlando with AL in July this year. Can you check-in online 24 hours in advance if you have an infant in your party? I do not see anywhere on the link above to tell me otherwise.

hi, i'm in the same postion as the OP.
I can certainly check in less then 30 hours before i fly out but when i'm returning do I need a print out of my boarding pass or do the kiosks do all that for you.
Also, I'm flying into FARO, is there an Aer Lingus kiosk in Faro does anyone know?
