Can anyone provide any info on these ? Insurance seems to be cheap for one taking into account its BHP so I've become interested in one.

i think the answers to this thread sum the car up pretty well. they are really nothing to talk about. that said, i would love one, they are a sensible bit of fun :pac:

its just shy of 200bhp wrapped up in a very "nothing to should about" package. aside from the bootlid spoiler and red bootlid badge it's pretty much indistinguishable from any other e12 corolla, whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you. at least there's no fancy body parts to be searching after (heaven forbid) if you'l need them. it also makes the car a cool sleeper and fairly theft proof.

they are a very peppy engine in the latter half of the rev range, so you do have to thrash them a bit to best utilise those 190 horses, but on the plus side they still have the potential to be very frugal, keeping well over 30mpg on a run if you take it easy. the early cars (pre 04 i think) are known to be fond of a drop of oil so watch for any signs of heavy oil consumption. they only other issue they are really known for is breaking lift bolts, but these are cheap and fairly easy for a DIY'er to replace as a preventative measure.

insurance is cheap because they are still largely priced out of "boy racers" hands. servicing is cheap with a chain driven engine, a lot of shared servicing requirements/ components with the 1.4 and 1.6 vvti's and 15" rubber.

spec's can vary pretty wildly. i'd be aiming for one with full leather at least. the cloth interior model leaves too little to separate it from the standard 1.4 bar different colour gauges and some brushed aluminium dash trim.

    Very understated cars.

190bhp and 1200kg is quick by anyone standards. If you can find one that is standard without stupid sideskirt mods and the like, it's a bit of a sleeper.

I was interested in getting one a few years ago, but went for a Mazda 3 MPS instead, mainly because the T Sport was 3 door only and after driving a diesel Skoda Fabia RS for a few years I found having no torque weird when I drove a Civic Type R.

An other car I liked and was pretty cheap was the Opel Astra OPC.Only negative with the T Sport is you will have to drive the **** out of it to make progress, it only has 130lb-ft of torque and makes it's max power @8000rpm.

That doesn't bother most people, but if your used to driving a turbo petrol or even a good turbo diesel, it can be frustrating.

Cheers man, the fact that there a sleeper is what I like about them, though the one I'm eyeing up is slightly lowered, original alloys ect, so anyone that knows their cars would know it's defiantly more then a 1.4. Reminds me a bit of your Glanza's originality yet cool.

30mpg would be pretty normal to me, my micra does just over that and does need to be trashed, for a better word, when you need it to move.

I've heard that Vtec's are still a better engine by far but at 21 I wouldn't bother due to insurance. So this seems like the obvious alternative since I can't seem to get a quote for a ST 170 and anything else I like is too rare to get hold of.

In regards to their oil problem isn't that the case with all early VVTi engines up until 2003 ?

Ibiza FR is another one worth looking at, with a good remap ( 220 - 230bhp ) it's a real sleeper, it's a bit of cult car in the UK.

220bhp in a 1100kg Ibiza would frighten the life out of some pretty quick cars

Other then the exhaust to me it looks just like a standard Ibiza :)

Is that 1.8 20v not the same **** heap from the MK-IV GTi ?

The Corolla T-Sport was also available with a super charger and 225bhp. Never sold in Ireland and only in small numbers in the UK.
