    Hi everyone,

Going to be on the road shortly and looking for advice on a small petrol hatchback to get me started.

So far in terms of models I've been recommended 00-02 VW Polos for around 1k. Based on that I have a quote of €950 from First Ireland. 27yo male living in a small midlands town with low mileage. My budget is tight so I can't afford to pay much extra on a 1.3L+ engine for insurance. I was looking at some 1.3 corollas but my quote doubles, they seem to be expensive and sought after for reliability too.

I'm just wondering what other comparable small hatchbacks that are worth looking at?

Fiat Punto is a decent cheap runaround.

Seat Ibiza worth a look too.

Ended up buying a 01 Punto Van, 1.2 petrol with 90k miles for €500 which was laid up for the last couple of years. Decent nick overall and very tight on the road. Just needs to have part of the exhaust replaced or welded. Otherwise a steal. My ould fella (who's a retired bike mechanic) said he wants first refusal on it if I upgrade when I get my full licence :pac:. He said it should piss through the NCT with a couple of minor tweaks once the exhaust is done.

Looking forward to getting it tidied up over the weekend and on the road. Has anyone used one of these type of bluetooth diagnostic dongles on a phone/laptop? Are they worth getting or is it better to invest in a regular cable model for a laptop?

Can you do your driving test in a van?

Nope, purchased from a friend just before he had time to advertise. Asked for €750.

Not sure. My sis completed hers recently using her instructors car. He charged 70 quid for a full pre test lesson and hire of the car for the test. She flew it and said he basically covered the same route and tests as her examiner. She couldn't praise him enough.
