Car broke by Burglar

    Hi there,

My Car was broke few days ago by burglar in an attempt to steal it but he couldn't start/drive it after he made huge damage to car's electric system.

He smashed one of window's glass, went into car, broke electric wiring system, I can't explain how badly he broke wires and lower part of steering in an attempt to start my car but at the end he wasn't successful but a huge damage has been made to my car.

I notified to Garda and Insurance company and car was towed to garage through Insurance company. It has been 5 days and I haven't heard from Insurance company but just verbally satisfaction that they will get back to me as soon as the assessor complete his reports.

My query here, is this normal that Insurance company take that long and leave the insured person in limbo for such a long time as the Garage man told me damage was so much to wires and lower part of steering and parts are not available in Ireland / EU and might take to order the part which could take from 8-10 weeks. Its also assessor's decision to either to buy the parts to fix or write off this car.

Is there anyway I can escalate to someone to speed up this process or any suggestion to resolve this issue as quickly as possible as it is very hard to live without car when kids are young and has to drop them to school by walk even if its bad weather.
Pity thing is Insurance only cover 5 days max curtsy car and we don't know how long would that take fix the car.

Would that mean if Assessor decides to fix the car by ordering the parts from out of Ireland and I have to wait until parts arrived and car is fixed so I will be without car for that long time and how would that work if car is written off?

Your feedback and suggestion is requested to get me out of this situation.

    Thanks in advance.

I would ask them (or the garage) to provide a courtesy car if it takes longer, but 5 days isn't an extremely long time to assess and decide tbh.

Friend of mine had to wait 2 weeks for a cheque for a written off car. I wouldn't expect it to be sorted in 5 days really - insurance claims take some time.

Beg, burrow or steal a car of a friend or relative. Otherwise look for a banger with tax and nct then sell when yours is fixed, it'll be cheaper than renting

Some insurance companies are better than others.
I wrote my car off on a Tuesday night. Courtesy car on the Wednesday. Had the payout check in my hand on the following Monday.
    All from one phone call.

I was with, and still am www.123.ie

I had Setallite Navigator in the car which was stolen as well which I haven't mentioned to Insurance company. Can I claim for it as well?

Also, I have two months Road tax left on car. Since, my car won't be on Road for another month I presume, would anybody know if I can get refund of this Road TAx?

    Thanks.

You can get a refund on road tax, for every complete month left. So, in your case that would be one, if it expires at the end of June.

They take an admin fee IIRC

I thought it was minimum of three moths and thereafter multiples of 3?

What car is OP. This kind of damage is very expensive to fix with new parts and could easily result in a write-off situation. Fear not though because it can be fixed fairly readily if you're not too concerned about cosmetics.

Check your home insurance for the sat nav, very few car policies include possessions, but the excess could be higher than a new unit along with loosing your no claims on 2 policies
