Garmin 800 - Help

    Hi there,

I bought a Garmin 800 recently and I am having some trouble with it, and would appreciate some help if anyone could advise.

Rather stupidly (now) I decided against buying it with mapping software already installed on it & decided that I would download free source mapping software.

Basically I have followed the instructions as per the link:

    http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/05/download-garmin-705800810.html

My problem is, is that when I put this on the Micro SD card the Garmin fails to pick up the file (you cannot select it as an option) - there is only the rubbish base map option.

I have also tried a different site, with the same results!

    Thanks,

    N

Start up the device, go to settings (the spanner),- System - Map - Map Information, select map - There you shall see the maps available. The Basemap probably shall be enabled, the new map disabled. Tap on basemap- choose the disable option. Tap on the new map;-select Enable. Then it should work.

I use Openstreet map from Talkytoaster site;-
    http://talkytoaster.info/ukmaps.htm#GPSRs-Only

    the map 140509-British-Isles+Contours-Routable-GMAPSUPP.zip.

A few times, I downloaded sections of Openstreetmaps (France & Germany) unzipped and copied to the micro SD card, with no problems.

    Best of luck.

I just used Talkytoaster myself today to download the OSM. Got a step by step tutorial on youtube(paused as I went along), very straight forward. Cannot comment on how good it is as I have not used it yet,

Have you unzipped the file and saved the img file into the sd card?

I use the Open Street Maps as well and find them great. Would have been lost in Beijing and Taiwan only for them. Here is a link to help you. Very clear instructions and lots of screenshots.
Note: the downloaded maps must be put on the SD card, not on the Garmin itself. Transferring can be quite slow unless you have a high speed SD card so patience is required.

Happened to me a couple of times, and eventually even my computer will not recognise my 800.

Turned out to be a corrupt micro sd card I bought off @dverts!!

Eventually bought a proper branded card and all is well now.

Basically try using a different card first to see if it will help solve the issue
