I plan to apply for parental leave for Aug/Sept so not return in Aug. Question is does the principal have more grounds for refusal since it is the beginning of school year? Anyone any experience of this?

Speak to your principal ASAP. If they are aware of the need to find a replacement they are more likely to get on board with it! You must give 6 weeks notice anyway, so no harm to get in now.
