    How short?

Under 90mm is getting into the length where people argue about it making the bike's handling twitchy or not.

I had a 90mm stem at the start while getting used to the road bike. Now use a 110mm one. Notice feck all difference in handling.

Get the right one to not be in pain, or get a smaller frame...

About 130mm at the moment,i reckon 20 or 30mm shorter might do the trick.

Are you new to cycling/exercising m8?
Could just be your muscles getting a workout holding your bodyweight up on your arms etc.

130 seems a bit long alright unless your a racer tryna flatten your back out for aero etc.

How tall are you? What size frame is the bike? Road or Hybrid type etc.
(roughly a number between 50" to 62" on a sticker on the frame)

If ya can you stick a sideview pic up of the bike. Lads here can tell you roughly from there then.

Easy to just bring it into a shop and ask.
What area do you live in, lads can recommend one for ya.

Cycling about 4 years. Im 6ft 2in. Bike is a Giant Defy 4 XL. Frame size feels OK just feel as if Im having to over reach on bars.

Sounds about right tbh. 100mm seems to be regarded as 'Stock' stem size.
If your on the Northside your welcome to a loan of one if ya like.
Maybe your stem is angle'd downwards too and you could flip it over to sit
    more upright etc.

I used this vid among others to get a good base when I was first setting up my own bike.

Basically while on the hoods your eyeline should look straight down thru the handlebars
    and the front axle etc.

Who advised you? Was it at a bike fit or a mate?
If it were a bike fit they should have told you what size to get.
If it were a mate do they know what they are talking about?
Do your research (not just a chat room) and see what's best, maybe even get a bike fit because it depends on your body shape and flexibility etc. The one thing I took away from seeing the pro bikes at the giro was there is no ideal bike set up, it's incredibly induvdual.
    Good luck.
