Another Rules Question

Not sure if this has been covered before but here goes.....

The query is in relation to changing the playing characteristics of a club... I know the following

If a club is damaged accidentally you can replace repair etc without unduly delaying play.

If the red mist descends and you bend the offending club around your knee - you must take the club out of play (think Crenshaw 1987 Ryder Cup)

The modern adjustable clubs cannot be tweaked during play...

Having said all that that how would you have dealt with the following

Playing on Sunday I noticed a rattling sound from my adjustable driver on the 10th tee. Now I have never moved anything away from the neutral settings, when I looked one of the weights had unscrewed and was about to fall out. Fearful of losing it I screwed it back in but then realised what I had done and reached for the 3 wood and didn't hit the driver on the back 9. The change wasn't deliberate but as the weight was loose and I had no idea what it was like on the first tee so I removed the driver from play. Now my score was irrelevant but should this be a DQ as the playing characteristics obviously would have changed (not as much as the swing!) since the first tee, I acted as soon as I was aware but was that enough

I have a copy of the 2011 Decisions but its not covered just wondering if its in the newest edition of the newest Decisions?

Fine to do it, Phil had to call a rules official last year to ask was it ok. All you are doing is repairing the club.

Yes rule 4-3a. a club that is damaged during the normal course of play can be repaired. This situation would be considered that.

I understand the that it could be considered damaged during the normal course of play, my issue is I had no ideal whether it was loose on the first tee and hence could I have been considered to return it to its normal condition...

I'm sure Bones pulls a torque wrench to Phils on the first tee....or listening to him talk about wind you'd be shocked if he didnt!
