Options to modernise heating system

Looking for opinions on modernising the heating system in our house. The property is a 3,500 sq ft bungalow with a mix of heating systems. There is an inefficient (surveyor suggests 70%) oil boiler supplying the rads and heating the hot water. The rads don't get particularly hot and despite bleeding them on several occasions there still appears to be air in the system. The hot water isn't as hot as I'd like. There is a solid fuel stove in the main living area and a bottled gas fire in the second living area. Finally there is electric heating in the granny flat which is a separate building. So all in all a bit convoluted! The original building which makes up half the property is a1940s cottage and it feels quite cool in there at night and the rads simply don't do the job. Oil hearing is zoned 3 ways, 2 heating zones and water.

My plumbing knowledge isn't great so I'd appreciate any suggestions from somebody with more knowledge than I have. I was thinking of installing a more efficient oil boiler, converting the gas fire to solid fuel and plumbing the granny flat for oil fired rads. Might look at solar to help with the water. Any benefit in changing the rads?

Thanks for reading, any thoughts or alternative suggestions? I'm keen to do a good job now as we are here for the long term.

There is enough zones in the house and the flat could be zoned separately. You could consider an Ariston Nuos for your hot water needs it's a cylinder with a heat pump on it.

If the rads get hot and still don't cut it they could be undersized. A heat loss calculation would need to be done.

Have you thought of any insulation upgrades? This could drastically improve the heating performance.

You should definitely check out the nuos I'm a big fan of them and the installation is cheaper than solar.

Thanks for the reply, I will check that out.

I'll be doing an upgrade on the attic insulation shortly. As far as I'm aware the previous owners have already installed the internal insulation on the older part of the house. I'm not sure the benefit of external insulation would justify the very large cost.
