How many lessons does a full time teacher work per week in Ireland and the UK?

Its not measured in lessons- different schools have different time allocations for lessons/class periods. Some periods are 40 ,45 or 60 minutes and often on a Wednesday classes may be shortened to 30 mins each in order to fit the half day for sports into the timetable. It varies from school to school.

A full time teacher in Ireland has 22 hours class contact time (broken into any number of class periods) plus most have Supervision and Substitution classes allocated as extra on their timetable. To that you can add whatever extra curricular they may do (not officially compulsory) and prep and correcting time......hard to say- but the official time in front of a class is 22 hours.

Have no idea about the UK though.

It's broadly similar in the UK.
    Normally you'd have 21-22 1 hour classes.

Here in Ireland, I teach 33 class periods a week of different duration & hit 22 hours contact time.

Best to outline clearly for non-teachers
Scheduled/Timetabled hours for average fulltime teacher are as follows:

    -22 hours of regular lessons
-4 hours of supervision and substitution (on-call plus delivered)
-1 to 6 hour average meetings under Haddington Road (depends on week)

In the UK I teach 25 lessons of one hour a week. Then two/three hour revision sessions for GCSE students after-hours (around exam time) and a couple of hours with detentions. It's pretty much 8.30am - 4pm contact time.

What about the evenings? Are the horror stories true? Paperwork etc

Horror stories are true for primary, but there is some non-contact time to do some of it.

Lots of paperwork but it kind of rotates. One week, you might have none, then another week when reports etc. are due, you'll have tons. Last week was full of 11 and 12 hour days but this week it's mostly 8am - 5pm and a bit of marking - not too bad. It gets much easier and more manageable the further into the year you go.
